In light of the proposed rules update: A recant and apology
Over the past few weeks I have been very acerbic in my defense of Wizkids and the MWDA rules. I have even personally attacked other members of the MWRealms community several times because they thought that the rules needed to be fixed. I repeatedly stated that every unit could be just as effective as other units when used properly.
I'm dreadfully sorry for my belligerence on this topic. I am sorry because I realize I was wrong.
I read the proposed rules update and was positively giddy with excitement. How could I, a person who had so staunchly supported the current rules, be that gleeful that Wizkids is considering changing them? Because deep down, I knew you all were right. I knew the rules were broken because I have utilized their shortcomings to my advantage in games before. And yet, despite this, I was in a state of denial. I had almost blinded myself with my refusal to believe it, but this breath of fresh air has let me accept the truth.
No, the rules aren't currently perfect.
Yes, the proposed changes are needed.
Yes, I was a fool to engage in mental bludgeoning matches over this issue.
Despite this, I have considered and still do consider Wizkids to be one of the most honest companies in the markey today. If their open approach to the rule fixes aren't proof enough to convince someone, then nothing will convince them.
Do you believe that charging should be at a 'Mechs primary speed? :)
I do.. I hope they toss that into the proposed changes. Or at least, make it so a charging 'Mech must have a clear LOS. I think this is needed *badly*.

I've examined everything I've said wasn't broken in the hour and a half since I read the proposed update. I've come to the conclusion that:
Charging should be restricted to 1x movement, and the target should get at least a +1 bonus to defense. This maintains the power of a Charge attack while improving the target's chance of surviving to engage.
VTOLs should not be able to make a ranged combat attack when using speed points.
I would be happy with *any* charge fix, I just hope they seriously consider making it 1x.. 'Mechs are just a big a reason why other 'Mechs are not fielded right now as the lesser units. We will have 'Mechs all right.. but they will all be either fast cheapies, Forestry 'Mechs or BR Legos.
I emailed them asking that they please consider testing this as well, since they are in beta mode.
Quid,
You weren't all wrong and I hope a part of you still has some faith in the old rules. Because, that is the part of you that will actually PLAYTEST and seriously consider ALL the implications of these rule changes without immediately believing that they are all good for the game.
I happen to agree with some of them, but I could easily build a degenerate army to abuse others with my eyes closed. In fact, I plan to do exactly that and then report that to WK. I hope you and everyone else does the same. The best way to test any rule is to try to abuse it as much as possible. If you consistently fail, then it has a good chance to be reasonable. If you succeed easily, the rule is probably bad for the game.
Oh, I'm not giving up on the current rules. I just realize that they're flawed.
Part of my reversal on this was actually playing in the Mile High Battle storyline scenario. It was completely lopsided and no fun for both sides. I had defended that incredibly biased scenario nearly as much as I defended the rules, and I was entirely wrong about it. It led to me pondering over my views a little more.
I care about this game. I want it to succeed. Up until now, I looked upon the naysayers as the enemy of the game and treated them as such. Instead, I now know that there is no enemy to the game. It's flawed, yes, but that's not any individual's fault. No rules are perfect right out of the gate, and MWDA has had new rules added to it constantly in just a little over a year.
In my humble opinion boys, you have been very right to defend the game. From every post that I have read almost every rule change wizkids has proposed is new and very well thought out.
The only exceptions being shake off and Pog stacking. You defended a friend while he was down and you did good. Wizkids' changes are monumental, however they are quite simply from what I can tell the most perfectly designed changes possible.
For all those who said wizkids never cared, they do, and from the looks of it they are smarter than you
It's good to see that the temperature of the room has cooled off by a few degrees :).
To FleabitFox: I don't support making Charge 1x movement. Why? Without it, Mechs have no way of outranging Tank Drops. I think that a +1 or +2 defense bonus would be in order, though. This way, a Mech would have a harder time Charging another Mech, but could still get a fairly easy hit on a Maxim lugging a tank around. That's my take on the issue.

Then there's no point in having speed points. the whole point of speed points was to spend 12 and get to attack.
There's no reason VTOLs should be able to attack when moving. 'Mechs and tanks can fire while moving as well, yet they can't move and shoot in the same turn.
VTOLs could still use speed points to change elevation.
