Well, no one showed up but myself and the BM last week so we decided to play a Dropship scenerio. We each had 2000 points to use. I played RotS and he did Spirit Cats. Half his points went for the dropship and the rest towards his army. We played on two playing boards and placed our terrain.
Well half way through the battle he started pulling his units into the bays... not realizing they acted as repair bays.. crapped my shorts when his mechs came out fully healed. At that point realizing that RotS does not have repair vehicles..."I'm Screwed".
Finally after 4 hours of battle I assaulted the dropship.. might I say the turrets brought Janella Lakewood down quick..
Called it quits for the night and might I say... a dropship is down right FUN.. as long as YOU have the dropship or a reapir vehicles. Learned one thing... brings lots of thumpers or SH towed arty. AP does nothing to a dropship.
Highly recommend everyone try a dropship scenerio.. the next time we are going to do it we have planned a 4 person battle, 2 per side and those who do not get the dropship get a mobile field base.
We created a mobile repair base out of the H building template. We place a D20 on it, which represents how many clicks of repair it can do on mechs and vehicles. We placed another D12 to represent how many clicks of damage it can take. Were taging the repair base at 200 points and it has a attack of 10. It also, like the dropship, can repair past the repair marker.
Oh its going to be 4000 points per side... CAN"T WAIT!!
When I run the Dropship, I run it as the BM, usually with only 4 mechs as backup (I've taken all MadCat IIs and all Atlases in the past). It is then a free-for-all beween the players, with the objective being to destroy the Dropship. It forces teamwork, but everyone's a little cautious (you never know who'll stab you in the back...). Usually it's 1000 points per player. The point totals end up around 8000 (all the players) to 2000 (me). Trust me, it's not as unbalanced as it sounds. Have fun with it!!
One thing I forgot to mention. If you do a free-for-all, you HAVE to ban arty. Otherwise the dropship does not stand a chance. There will be no reason for your opponents to engage. I rank the players simply on points killed. If I kill it, no one gets the points. If it charges itself to death, the last player to damage it got the points. This game plays pretty well on a 4x8 table with the dropship smack dab in the middle. We've also run it with all mechs. One scenario players had to bring a faction pure lance (star for the clans). I reduced firing formations to a min of two and and let them choose if the support was adding to attack or damage (damage added was the damage of the weapon system used to a max of 2). We had a BLAST!
