This may seem like a daft idea, but I think it would stop players complaining about retiring pieces.
Wizkids could sell packs of dial stickers corresponding to each set and its LE's that have the upgraded stats for the units in those sets. This could include another sticker that was stuck onto the top of the units base to change other values like range, new cost etc.
If Wizkids are seriously planning on changing the game mechanics, then this would be a good way to do it without getting rid of peoples previous pieces.
I may be alone in saying that I would buy these stickers if they were released.
How about they use a system like Magic.
Where there is an amout of sets in a "standard play" that uses the retirement. But create a "Total play", where all sets can be used?
I still think that encouraging faction purity would go a long way to helping the overall balance of the game.
Most of these "broken units" aren't that broken when they are played in a faction pure army. Yeah, Arnis is cool, but it's a fair trade considering SC lack of arty and decent vehicles.
And yeah that SS Arrow IV is a killer, but play it with a SS Mech, and all of the sudden, things don't look that good.
I'm not saying faction purity should be strictly enforced, but it should be encouraged. New players should be encouraged to concentrate on one faction, and trade pieces to help that goal. Unit trading is one of things that makes collectible games fun.
WK is saying you can still use all figures in venue-supported events and unrestricted. That's fine. But how often do you see envoys running venue-supported events? I've seen MAYBE like 1-2 run in the past year. I made the suggestion to hold such events at my venue and have like a $5.00 entry fee per person to pay for boosters for prizes and it's a struggle to even get 4 people to agree to it. I'll try it for a while but I have my doubts that any of them will do this more than once or twice before they stop coming.
Unrestricted? I love the format. Being able to use house rules to plug the glaring holes in the current rules and to set up special scenarios is great. But if WK never puts the event up so we can hold them then what's the point in telling us we can use those figures for this event type? At this point we're down to 2 events per month and none of them have been restricted.
If we were on the old system where we could sign up for like 1 event per week and we could choose which format to play then we could at least be holding enough unrestricted events that the 'retirement' issue would not be a big deal.
Are there some busted units in the game that need to be dealt with? Not many .. but yes. Will retirement take care of that problem? Yes and no. Yes it will eventually phase out the current 'cheese' pieces ... but with sets taking a full 2 years to cycle out that is a LONG time to be dealing with a broken piece. The flip side is you release sets faster in order to cycle the old stuff out faster but then you get all the players complaining that the sets are coming out too fast and they can't afford it. I'd much rather see an obviously broken piece either be FAQd or banned outright then have to deal with it for 2 years until its phased out. Chances are if people have to wait that long to get rid of something that's throwing the game balance out of whack people would rather just quit than wait that long to see it phased out.
I'd much rather see faction purity implemented as policy on WK-sanctioned non-unrestricted events. Will it stop the cheese? Some but not all. But how many people will take 4 SS A4s when they can't screen them any more with their precious BR Peasants which before only cost them 64 points ... and now they have to use 11 point pieces instead for 176 points?
The bottom line is ... yes the retirement system would work ... but it certainly isn't the best option available.
It could all be introduced gradually as well, if it weren't just a ploy to get us to buy more stuff. They could, for example, hold one event a month with restrictions like "DA+LI" only. Then people could see if was producing more fun and better games as WK suggests. I think it wouldn't, but they could easily do the experiment and then check for the results.
What I really resent is having to replace all my Maxim transports with whatever else comes out. I got a formation for each faction.
I personally could care less wheather or not sets are retired if they would still produce a small amount of the boosters, even if they arn't allowed in play.
I like sniper arty but they're only in FFE and I have only two, both HL. And I want a Thor or Caden's Ryoken II, but guess what... not to may are trading them in my area anymore.
