During the Clan invasion of the Inner Sphere (3048 - 3052), Clan Wolf (a predominately Warden faction) was at the forefront of the invasion, led by Khan Ulric Kerensky.
In the process of the invasion, Ulric Kerensky was elected as IlKhan (Khan of Khans) of the Clans. He effectively become the Commander-in-Chief of the whole Clan invasion and re-initiated the push towards Terra.
Anastasius Focht, Precentor-Martial of ComStar, challenged the Clans to a Trial of Possession for Terra. He proposed Tukayyid as a substitute world on which to do battle. Ulric agreed to this Trial. The prize, if the Clans won, was free and unchallenged passage to Terra - and if ComStar won, the Clans would stop their invasion for a period of 15 years.
The outcome of the Tukayyid battles was a close thing. Clan Wolf was the only Clan to win both of its engagements (as far as I recall). However, the final result went against the Clans, and the Truce of Tukayyid began.
Ulric remained as IlKhan.
In 3055, a call was made for a Clan Council. At this Council, Ulric was accused of genocide - his actions in accepting the Truce was leading to the wastage of whole generations of Clan warriors. As a result of this accusation, Ulric lost his position as IlKhan. Ulric immediately called for a Trial of Refusal. This led to a massive conflict between Clan Wolf and Clan Jade Falcon.
The Refusal War, as it became known, resulted in the complete decimation of Clan Jade Falcon. It also resulted in the almost complete destruction of Clan Wolf.
Khan Natasha Kerensky (the famous Black Widow) died during the Refusal War. Star Colonel Ulric Kerensky also died at the conclusion of the war.
Ulric, however, had forseen the devastation of his Clan, and had taken precautions. He sent a large proportion of the Wolf population, along with several Galaxies, all led by Khan Phelan Ward, to the Inner Sphere. Once there, they joined up with Phelan's family (the Kells) and settled on Arc-Royal. Phelan lost the bloodname of Ward but was given the newly created bloodname of Kell, and the Wolves were declared outcast by the Clans - thus becoming Clan Wolf-In-Exile.
Meanwhile, the surviving Wolf warriors in the Clan sphere were declared by IlKhan Elias Crichell to be a new clan called Clan Jade Wolf. Vlad Wolf, now Vlad Ward, was made Khan of this new Clan. His first action was to challenge Crichell. This resulted in Crichell's death and Vlad renaming Clan Jade Wolf as the reborn Clan Wolf.
Thus there came to be two Clan Wolf - one within the Inner Sphere (the Wolves In Exile), and one within the Clan area of influence.
