While I was in Nationals most of my time at Origins I did get the chance to try some of the quickplay on Thursday and then again Sunday between the break between my elimination and the award ceremony.
1st for all of you who were not at Origins all the MW quickplay used the new MechHunter Rules. A dumbed down version of our beloved game. Here are the basics
No Running
No Shooting other mechs
No SE's
No Min Range
Everybody has a 360 arc
No Moving if you have a shot without a 1click damage penalty
No Special attacks
No Heat
No Pushing rules (go every turn for no penalty)
You play on the Hero Clicks map so no placed Terrain
No rulers needed just use the squares to check distance and movement
Once you get over the cants the mission is this kill any piece Vech or infantry you want to take home with you. All your kills are yours to keep
Oh here is the best part for wining this game you get to go home with all your kills
Thats right the "winner" takes home all the "great" vech and infantry you killed and the BM gives the Fellowship player a Falcons Prey LE.
I am going to allow the forum to decide just how they feel about this being the only available quick play during Origins.
I will also put this in while I did not play any constructed events other then Nationals (Took all my time from Friday to Sunday) I did not see any way to get Falcons Prey LE's other then by winning fellowship at one of these Mech Hunter Events or by coming in the top 4 at nationals. Thats right I placed 8th and got 2 Liao and one DFA LE I think as I was relatively disappointed I didn't check real well.
For participation in Nationals everyone who stayed the two days got four LE's None from any set more recent then DFA and none higher then LE 4.
Ill post my opinion of MECH HUNTER bellow but I would like to hear the communities opinion on this.
IMO
The MECH HUNTER Format has merrit in that it will allow very new players a chance to build their armies and learn some VERY basics of the game. It should not be the only available quick play! The game is mind numbing it takes everything away from Mech Warrior and turns it into essentially a game of Hungry Hungry Hippos. I saw some amazing fellow ship displayed so much that I nearly wanted to gag people including my self would just give away their entire pull even GREAT UNIQUES in an effort to try to get that precious Falcons Prey LE. I was so appauled by the game I couldnt handle more then the 2 rounds I played.
Prior quickplay has been in the Battle Royal format 4 players draft out of 2-3 boosters and go at in one arena. Average play time 1 hour. Rewards for Fellowship and Champion.
Hungry excuse me Mech Hunter takes at most 30 min to play and uses half the boosters.
So all it does from an event view point is cycle through the line faster.
From a player perspective it basically tells those of us that are experienced and know our game to go play something else your odds of getting an Falcons Pray LE are to low to warant participation. When you factor in New Player Fellowship awards far out weigh old and that if you have a pulse you can win at an event like this and thus disqualify yourself for the LE its VERY VERY Frustrating.
