I was in WK's forum when i saw that some one had said that entire retirement is only rumor and that it won't happen. Was he right about it and were we only fooled? Still that new MtG style type system might truly come.
I'm not sure what you mean by 'Entire Retirement.' Retirement is already in place for Mage Knight and Hero Clix. MW is next in line.
There have been a lot of 'Sky is falling' posts over retirement. I can't say the idea thrills me, but my ire is tempered by this: really key units, that older players already have are most likely to be reissued as-is and the old version will still be legal for play. (Any reissued unit that is not changed from the original allows the original to still be played, per WK And we've seen proof of this in Heroclix.)
SO, what will we lose? VV1 Rangers? Fox Armored Cars?
This also gives WK the chance to fix units that are broken or need a power boost. Caden with better heat, etc.
IT all depends on how they implement the base set. IF done well, we shouldn't see too great an immediate impact.
MK 2.0 isn't a good comparison because the new set also completely changed the game. Not likely to be that drastic a change with MW.
Wk allready stated that units will not be retired in the unrestricted type format, retirement will only affect scenario and constructed. Hve you noticed all the unrestriced prizes recently have been older units that will retire soon?
Rumors like this have been around for a long time.
A specific one i have also heard of is that if the JF-Set is no success than MWDA might be discontinued.
I have been around since the start of MWDA and I usually dont give pretty much about rumors like this but there are in fact "hints" (dont know how to say it better) that make me wonder:
- The canceled Comstar-Page (was to expensive)
- No Storyline-Events for MWDA in august and september only constructed/unrestricted events (less work for Wizkids)
- Less LEs in the comming set (it has been stated by Wizkids that MWDA-LEs are more expensive to produce than for the other games)
- Check the following text from the Wizkids-Homepage:
WizKids Inc., makers of the best-selling HeroClix®, Mage Knight™ and MLB™ SportsClix™ collectable miniatures game (CMGs), announce the release of... (MWDA not mentioned)
I dont wanna say that the rumors are true but these facts might show that MWDA isnt that important for Wizkids anymore.
How this might affect the future of MWDA we will have to see.
Right now i would hope WK wnats to hold onto MW, it has a solid fanbase and an attractiveness to other gamers. Wasn't MWDA the best selling game of wizkid's last year? They would be insane to kill the game that would prompt me to go over to the 40k camp.
In case WizKids would discontinue MW:DA because of sales not being what they want them to be*, maybe another company might come along and pick up the game. However, there is a risk that a relaunched MW:DA will be based upon miniatures that need assembly and painting. Not that I would complain.
* Which reminds me of rules not being what I want them to be, but eh.
Keep in mind that WizTopps OWNS MW, Battletech & Click dials, I doubt they would license it out to a competitor if they find it unprofitable. They let Fanpro "borrow" CBT to help keep the fanbase alive for MWDA and because WK doesnt appear interested in a traditional TTG format. While if WK gives up they could allow Fanpro to continue in an attempt to keep the franchise alive (so they can milk it for toys cartoon ect), I doubt we will see a new clickytech.
MW is actually Wk's second most-sucessful line after HC, so I wouldn't worry about it being discontinued. Sure, we are getting a lot less expansions at this time compared to last year, but then again most guys on these boards wanted less sets!
It really takes a lot for a company to discontinue certain products. They have to see that in the next year that they could possibley dip low enough that they could possibley lose money before they decide to discontinue something. And usually then, they wait for a bit to see if it picks back up. If it doesn't, they stop with it. I used to collect certain action figures, but they stopped making them years ago because not many people bought them. Even though they were discontinued, they still sold for a while before they finally made the decision to stop.

This is sort of what i'm afraid of. In the Heroclix base set, they re-issued figures with slightly different dials. Which meant that even if you had ten of each rank of Elektra, you could not use them, because the new version wit hthe exact same scuplt had *slightly* different numbers on the dial, and you had to buy it again. The old version that you owned was not legal for play.
They did it before, hoping to force players to re-purchase units, and we have more reason to believe they will do it again than we have to believe they will not. Heroclix is a good benchmark for the retirement debate, I think. Unfortunately, i've seen the effect set retirement has had on Heroclix locally... it utterly destroyed both the tournament scene and overall sales. I honestly hope that Mechwarrior does not see similar results. but, as Socrates said, "Insanity is the act of repeating the same actions and expecting a different result". Seems WizKids/Topps would need to be pretty insane to let set retirement go through...

Actually, the only "slightly different" dials in the new base set are in the starters. They wanted to give older players a reason to buy the starters (with the new rules and power card). The rest of the set figures are identical to the old ones, just with a new set icon.
Still it would be interesting to see 'before' & 'after' statistics concerning the amount of HeroClix-boosters and starters sold. It might prove to be enlightening.
But I guess that's classified company information, and it's not like it's worth sending an industrial spy.
