I went to a netting the pigeon scenario and unfortunetly the guy who was running it is a complete and utter idiot. First of all he keeps the prize support most of the time and just tells you he's going to send it to you. But the thing that really pisses me off is that it was the last round and I was about to win when the guy tells me it's time. So I start to finish my turn and he tells me I can't because time has been called, and I tell him that thats not fair since he never gave a 2 minute warning or anything of the sort. Then he tells me that you aren't supposed to finish your turn if time is called. So I get angry because the idiot cost me a win and say he's a crappy warlord. So I get banned, which is perfectly okay I tell him because I don't plan on going back anyway after the horrible way you ran the event. In short, I'm very angry, and this post is the best way of venting and letting others know not to go to the tournament if this guy is running it.
his handling of prize support is questionable. It is supposed to be handed out directly after the tournament. He is correct though in that when time is called, play ends immediately. Giving a 2 minute warning is a courtesy and personally i don't do it. It makes people start randomly pushing to capture/kill/ etc. If a player asks what the time is a i always tell them but then their opponent knows too so it can be a bonus or a liability. Also if you feel he is a bad warlord and have a logical well presented arguement get your friends and tell the store owner you plan on boycotting his shop as you feel the tournaments he runs are not enjoyable. Also remember you did have the previous 50 minutes to get the win so he did not necessarily "cost" you the win as you didn't obtain it in enough time.
I was mad about the time thing becayse I had alredy declared my action, and started to roll my dice in my hand when he said time. I am also used to what the normal warlord does and that is letting you know when there is 2 minutes left and then both players get two more actions at the end.
You are mostly correct, but the rules state that when time is called, the current action is resolved. So, if you are rolling the dice for an attack, you get to finish it. But, you don't get to declare a capture action. Most reasonable, I think. That is, if you have to have a time limit at all.
much agreed count, except Id prefer the ever popular tire iron. Wizkids is seems really concerned about its customers and resolves most things quite well. They would probably send him a good informative e-mail about the matter at leaste I would assume.
at one of my old venues i used to play at, the warlord was a jerk, when i was a beginner i asked if he could teach me how to play. he said watch these guys and you'll learn. What a jerk he wouldn't teach me. The warlord there never took stats or anything, and when we had the whirlwind tourney he had no clue on how to run the event. He also tried trading me once and the warlord said " alright my troll chieftain for your mystic and magna draconum. Yeah right i wasn't going to trade two draconum for a troll chieftain. what a ripoff, the warlord had crazy rules like, you can only roll one die for shockwave and if you necromance a warrior more than twice the third time he could take control of the warrior. One time i played against him and kicked his butt
it was a messed army he used and i won
i thought techun would cream me but my storm golem and magus took care of it.
the warlord also did not play action tokens which at tournaments your supposed to. The warlord never kept track of stats and he never had LE's as prizes. At first it was free, then i said "why not have tournaments where we can win prizes. the owner asked the warlord how much should it be, the warlord sais five dollars. so that first and second place could get a booster pack and everyone else wasted five dollars. the owner is the kind of guy who won't have tournaments in his store unless he gets something out of it such as money. PRIZES, PRIZES, ARRGH HASN'T THE WARLORD EVER HEARD OF WIZKIDS PRIZE SUPPORT.
WELL SEEMS NOT SO. well anyway the venue left and a few months before it left the warlord got fired because he never showed up.
I have played in over 20 different venues, with many different Warlords.
I find it best to always ask how the venue runs their event, and how the Warlord runs the game.
I have not been to any 2 venues that run the same.
It could be as simple as how you determin a re roll when only one die hits the floor. ( some venues have you re roll both dice, some only the one that fell )
This is definitely among the top 10 rules that are played either incorrectly or in a widely different manner between venues. I think a top 10 list might be helpful so that players will know what to look for and ask about when visiting new venues. This is definitely on the list, as is movement through Hindering Terrain, captives and Demoralized figures at the end of the game.
As for the problem at hand, the way it is best done is that a declared action can be finished. But I've seen it done about 5 different ways at other venues. I feel for you, but this is one of those important Top 10 problem rules that all players should bring with them to venues to ask about before play begins.
Anyone have more rules for the list? Perhaps when we have the 10 best examples we can detail them out and create a 1 or 2 page list for people to print out.
I learned my lesson the first time I went to another venue. I found out right before the final round that they only went by points, not wins, and gave 600 points for a bye instead of 300. So somone with a 2-1 record and a bye finished ahead of me and my 3-0 record. Had I known they played this way from the beginning, I would have played for points rather than wins, and increased my playing speed. But I lived and learned. And now we need to help others with this list to learn the easy way, since many of us now know how much doing it the hard way can suck.
You are allowed to finish your current action, not the turn, howver. The warlord sounds like he is 'secretly' hoarding all the LE's for himself. Have you EVER recieved any of them in the mail???
Our venue has always played that the current player finishes their turn, not the action.
I just checked the official tournament rules though, and sure enough it reads, "the battle ends as soon as the current action is resolved."
What happytonamy says about pushing to kill/capture things knowing that you have nothing to lose makes sense, and I myself have found myself doing that at our venue when I had the last turn.
It sounds as though you had the right to at least complete what you were doing though, as you had already declared the action. His handling of prize support also sounds very questionable, and I too think you should report him.
Try the venue first as you are more likely to get a fast response, but failing a satisfactory outcome it might be a good idea to try WizKids. It would be a good idea to get multiple complaints sent, so see if friends of yours at the venue are similarly disillusioned with your warlord.
I have allways tried to maintain a house rule free venue. I have had visiting players and they had no problem ajusting to how i ran games. since i try my hardest to follow the rules exactly.
Now, first of all I want to point out a few things to Beasty. Yes, the Warlord was a jerk, but it was not the best of you to angrey at him.
House rules need to be declared at the start of the event. Best thing to do, is aks the warlord, or the venue how the event is run before the event is start and any house rules you play by... be stupid, ask questions. Also, ask what the prizes will be. $5 is not too much to play in an event, but that is my limit, and it better be a good venue and well a well run event
anywaz, if during the event he comes up with some weird ruling, after the event, ask him to show you where it is in the rule book. This is his time to admit making a mistake, and make it up, or to show you how much of a jerk he is. i cannot stress this enough, AFTER the game. During the game, the Warlord is the law, and it is rather discourtious to challange his ruling.
if after all this you think you were treated unfairly, contact wizkids and explain the situation as much as possible. When you contact them, do not make it personal. Do not verbally attack the warlord, or what he did. or the venue, but explain it as easily as possible
I just got an e-mail from the Warlord who ran the campaign about this post, so I thought I'd add my two cents. I was there, and I had the opportunity to play in the tournament. What Beasty isn't telling you is about his overall poor conduct and bad sportsmanship. He was a good player in terms of knowing the rules and strategy, but he needs to work on learning those social rules and cues. After our game he complained loudly several times that he should have won and that I didn't deserve to win because he made some errors. I told him that that's Mage Knight, and it works both ways; that he should take his loss like a man. There's a way to complain and lament your mistakes and a way to complain and degrade your opponent; he did the latter.
Regardless, I sucked his attitude up and took it like a man. He also failed to mention that when time was called, it was actually two minutes over. The reason for this was that the Warlord didn't have a watch and I offered to time the game. My game ended quickly (I played a little kid, who took his loss graciously) and I got to chatting with some other people. I got distracted, and when someone asked how much time was left, I said that time had already passed. His last turn had already occured. That's why he told him that he couldn't finish his turn.
I can certainley understand Beasty's frustration at feeling that he lost the game because of the Warlord. I'm a warlord myself and sometimes I make a bad call, because I don't know every rule perfectly. Sometimes I've had a bad call made on me, but I defer to the Warlord's authority if I cannot convince them otherwise.
What Beasty fails (again) to mention is that after the Warlord told him to stop he became argumentative and rude. When the Warlord used his authority to back up the call, Beasty insulted him. If you know this warlord, you'd know that he runs about 5 tournaments a week. He's one of the nicest, funniest, most easy going guys I've ever played with. But he expects the same amount of respect and levity that he grants. I think he made a fair call in banning Beasty from his tournaments for his conduct. He even offered to let him apologize, and he didn't.
He doesn't keep the prize support, either. It hadn't arrived this week; I asked the venue.
So, here's more information to balance his perspective. Beasty, you weren't horrible or anything, you were just rude to the wrong guy.
