The weak version is great for it's point cost, but the tough version has that 1 extra click of LI. Allowing you to push the warrior sprite to gain tactical advantage while still maintaining its' LI.
I vote for weak. The *** can actually attack, but their range isn't great and if your main purpose is to use their LI to protect something bigger, don't waste the points on ***. If you actively want to use them to attack, go w/ ***, but by the time you get close enough to shoot things, you're going to be close enough for them to base you rather quickly. I made that mistake when trying to take on a formation of steam golems. :p
Can't shot them LI IMHO, but I do agree that * for small games and *** for conquest. Put 5 *** in a formation and then use them as a secondary attack, bet ya your opponent will ignore it. Till the hit, that is.
It really depends on what tactic you plan for the WS.
If the plan is to use the WS to block LOS for non MB attacks then I would recommend the * version. Very affordable even in a 200 point conflict. If you think you need a bit more versatility, potential need to push, and/or late game clean up attack then I would recommend the *** version.
Remember, Stonethrowers can fire over the WS (or any LOS blocker) with indirect fire, and MB goes right through. In these cases you may need to sacrifice your WS and base the offending attacker. In these cases use the * version since they are more cost efficient.
