I have had a few unusual ideas running through my mind. What would MK be like if you could only run single faction armies (dual-faction figures are allowed and Shyft/MS are one faction). Here's what I would predict:
1. ML/Ram would only be in BPR or Shyft/Mage Spawn armies. (Revenant Priest and Lich are only MS figure with ML).
2. All factions would have their weaknesses more prominently shown.
3. The Deathstar would rise again. (AG has most of the ME people)
4. Bone Toss would only work with BPR or Shyft/Mage Spawn (Skeletons and Detonating Zombies)
5. The Chaos Mage would become the ultimate Swiss Army Knife
6. The Orc Raiders would become extremely popular (OST)
Try building a 300 point army of a single facion.. pretty easy, eh?
Now do it wit every faction.. bit tougher?
Now add the cost of all the boosters needed to have that collection...
Now try to convince a new player to spend that much to get into the game.
Nope - I don't think that this is a good route to even consider for tournies; for fun games it doesn't matter, but for tournies this would turn off a lot of newer/future players.
For casual games it can be fun, but for tournaments there would be some serious balance issues. Its often near impossible to beat an army with multiple stone throwers in a normal game, try doing it with only a single faction.
Now try to do the same against an AG, big bounder army.
Perhaps a better Idea would be to allow a point total bonus if you went single faction. for example you get 210 points rather than 200.
Or you could have figures with 2 point cost totals, 1 for a single faction army and one for a multifaction. It would keep people from splashing for each factions best figs.
I do beleave we should make a player say if he is Necro, KI, Atlantis etc and then if they are every figure in their army of that faction is 1/4 the price or something. I used to have this dilema but not really anymore since some factions would NEVER get played them.
I just wish the tournys didn't say, must have 1 figure of that faction. How many people saw podo's, vounteers, etc.
Maybe if we did something called a "force organization chart", then maybe it would work.
Here's the rundown:
Each warrior is of a specific type. Warrriors with Command are the "Leaders". The powerful melee warriors or highly specialized warriors, such as Blade Golems, Technomancers and Goblin Grenadiers, are "Elites", the basic warriors, such as Goblin Volunteers, Woodland Scouts, Utem Guardsmen, Crystal Bladesmen, Nightblades and Whelps would be "Troops". Mounted warriors or warriors with Charge, Bound or Flight would be "Fast Attack" and the heavy artillery (Flame/Lightning, Shockwave) and heaviest hitters (Amotep Gunners, OSTs, etc.) would be "Heavy Support" And for each type of game, you can only field a certain number of warriors.
Here are some more examples of the different troop types
This would be easyer for that:
uniques= Leader
Support= Anyfigure with over 8 or higher range
Melee= Any figure with 7 or less range(includeing 0)
Meidcs= Any type of healing abilite.
Dont exect WK to implament this because they want a simple game and this would complacate things. For a fun game this might be VERY fun.
I think that WizKids were trying to make people create mono-faction armires with all these Faction versus Faction campaigns. You know, why support a side if you won't use its figures?
I play the game to win, but I play the game for fun. I spend way too much money on the game, and have plenty of pieces to create single faction armies for every faction. In fact i could field legitimate 2000 point Conquest armies in each faction.
I love single faction. It looks cooler and it inspires the troops to greater feats of bravery. I know this is true, because i always roll better when i play single faction. Try it sometime, those little guys fight harder when they are fighting with their friends!
Originally posted by Yandros The entire game is based around mercenaries supporting a warlord - nothing to do with the individual's birth or background.
The entire world is set for mixed factions - and the scenarios are no different.
I'd consider playing fun games that are mono faction - but it really would get old seeing the same mono faction armies all the time at tournies.
Who'd play NS? lol.
Who'd play EL?
KI would see some play - but AG would take the field the most.
When we play Conquest for "FUN" we always try to play single faction armies with mercenaries as follows:
For 2,000 points at least 1,500 points must be from the single faction of your choice.
Each person picks their faction.
Any faction that was not picked becomes avaialable for mercs. in everyones army.
Our group has been playing since the "DAWN" of Mage Knight. We all have very large collections. Just today I saw a Solanovi army of 2,000 points played (yes, 100% Solanovi and it kicked but ).
