Here's some of what you'll want:
1x Wallpack 2 (contains corner posts and 2 very short spacer walls)
2-3x Wallpack 1 (3 walls per pack)
A basic castle would be:
T=G=T
|::::::|
+===+
That's 2 Wallpack 1s and 1 Wallpack2
The more basic walls, the more at risk your castle is.
Walls don't defend themselves, so your basically looking at creating spaces that are vulnerable.
Fewer walls looks less cool and has a smaller courtyard but is tactically better in the game.
is the Gatehouse the same width as the Keep? If it is then I can make a castle with 4 towers (1 in each corner) and then a keep and a gatehouse. The walls between the towers can be one unit wide or greater depending on how much I want to spend.
I'd end up with a very narrow rectangle castle, but defendable.
I had a thought about castle designs. One thing that might work in Conquest games would be to place the gatehouse or other entrance way behind an "L-shaped" wall. In my observation, the gatehouse is often the focus of a fight and usually is the first piece attacked since it can be forced open, as compared to reduced to rubble. The rubble hinders movement but an open gatehouse does not. This L-shape would provide the defense some cover and would help to bottle-up any attacking army. Just a thought.
the only problem with the wall packs is that I found that I had waaaaaaaaaayyyyyyy too many left over of :Buttress, "small Wall pieces", and Buttress support pieces (as they are called in the product description)
all the pieces fit together and I used all of the wall/wall with door pieces in the layout, so you can take a look and kind of estimate what you will need depending on the size of the box you want to make. I put the conquest figs in the middle to show relative size to figs.
(before anyone asks, I traded for most of the stuff)
I believe the Tower may be the same width as well.
Wall pack2 is a special kit. It has 1 wall with a door, 4 corner posts (a post with wall sockets on all 4 sides), and some spacer walls (short walls)
The corner post + 1 spacer will even out the distance of 1/2 the tower, allowing you to put a tower on one side and the spacer+post on the opposite side. Yes, having 4 towers solves the problem, but that's $100 of parts.
Thus, my castle diagram implies that + means corner post and a spacer
In WK's original castle pics, they show 1 Tower + 1 wallpack1 + 1 Wallpack2. Look closely for the short spacer walls and how they align opposite the tower to even it out so everything connects. In theory, if you could get enough of these, you could use them to join everything and they could never be destroyed.
Tactically, using door walls is a bad idea. They cost the same in points, but they demoralize sooner, forcing the door open, and thus is a breach sooner than a normal wall. Basically, a vulnerability.
Build your castle on the back edge of the playing area with no back walls and you'll save points and prevent a vulnerable point.
If you want a larger courtyard, at least make sure you have a tower/keep/gatehouse with overlapping fire from the next one. If you build your wall segments too long, you'll have an unsupported area. Most would agree that more than 3 wall segments is probably too sparse.
Here's what my castle looks like:
T=G=T
|::::::|
|::::::|
D:::::|
+=K=+
T is tower
= or | is wall
D is door wall
+ is corner post and a spacer (along the horizontal axis)
K is the keep
I paid for mine with volunteer points. Maybe I'll get 2 more towers, But I don't have an immediate need for it.
Mission accomplished! Those Pictures were great Dando, and I really like that design with the keep in front of the wall with the two towers.
My idea was to do the same with the keep at one end and the gatehouse at the other. With you pics it will be easy to count how much i need. Time to go shopping!
I should become a warlord, I'd have fun and get stuff!
Thanks Janx, the corner piece plus spacer! i was forgetting that piece. thanks for the clarification.
hmm..I've made a blueprint of a 6000 PTS castle somewhere.....don't know where I left it.....well I wouldn't be abled to get all the pieces anyhow..altough.......
