red sprites are also useful as they can, you know, actually hurt something? And with range, they don't have to negate their greatest bonus (can't be shot).
Crystal protectors are cuter.

The Warrior sprite wings are better for mods.

If you have the points to spare, particularly in conquest, I prefer the warrior sprites. They not only block LOS, but also manage to control a good chunk of ground in front of them due to the threat of a formation attack. Additionally, the warrior sprites have much deeper dials, the tough even keeping LI for 2 clicks, allowing it to push and still be a good LOS blocker.
That said, in conquest my reference for LI walls is usually the Phooka. 9 of them with the Hamburgler to give them all 12" move is a highly mobile wall. They also have greater range and the magic enhancement makes their formation attacks actually rather significant (5 Phooka formation in wall shape, tough lead = 12 attack 8 damage).
In rebellion, particularly small build totals though, I'll use the crystal protector much more often. The backup healing ability is always nice and they're just so darned cheap...
I actually like to use both in rebellion and conquest. Both have LI, and tehy have the same movement. Generally you will see them interspersed together making long walls. Point wise, the crystal protector. But if I dont really have to worry about points, I use both. Both have their strong points, and are deadly used together.
So you dont have to choose one or the other, use them both.
CPs are cheap enough to use in small unlimted games but for conquest I'll use warrior sprites every time cause they can be your front line wall and do damage if need be.
I prefer the warrior sprites, I need something that can actually defend itself. Protectors are nice, but easily dealt with. If I want a healer, I'll go with something a little more reliable like a medicine troll.
The CPs are great! They are fine healers for 15,17 pts and are LI on top of that. The Wariors are fine but are a little expensive for what they can do. I would rather put the extra points into my main hitters or the rest of the beef in the army. They are both support so don't kid yourself trying to get a two for one with the Wariors. CP do double duty as a support fig and since you cannot shoot them they need to get into base with your CPs and then that is when your main force can get into that action:).
