Mine wen down by the end of the 3rd turn this last weekend.
10k point castle siege...
one player did 5 points with charging thunderdoom troll, then the next turn (after breaking away) did another 6 with techun (double 6's), then a bounding MB for another 7 (double 6's with a 6 damage). Killed it good....
ya gotta wrap them up! I take 9 dwarven pikemen and a force marcher, and make a ring around my titan, without touching the titan. I leave a little gap in there so he can jump forward, shoot someone, then the steel circle can wrap him up again...
for whatever reason, a 3' dwarf can block line of fire from a dragon, so huzzah!
I normally don't use them very often because they are such a point expenditure. I have used Gilgarsh at ancient level when I use a titan and I have only lost him once.
Because they are such a point expenditure you can't use them as a main attacking unit because if you loose it, it is very difficult to make up the points.
I use Gilgarsh primarily as a hit and run figure. I will hit a figure where I know that I won't take an return attacks that next turn or bring in enough support units to where my opponent won't get any easy chances on him.
Playing with a titan automatically puts a big target on him and always expect your opponent to do everthing they can to kill it and you have to do everything you can to prevent it.
I usually lob my hill giant behind terrain before i feel the need to bring him out and pick up whatever target I need to eliminate....
I prefer to get him to isolate a few figures then go after them, even to the point of basing them, but have a couple of support figs about to harass any others who would see themselves as a giant killer...
Yes a giant can go down under a flurry of attacks...but if u pick your targets well, and exucute your tactics, the giant will destroy far more points than you paid for it!!
I played against the ring around the gilgarsh before and think is a big waste of points because you get so much tied up in the giant and the formation that leaves other figures vulnerable. All your opponent have to do is give you a couple of mediocre sacrafices to tie up your titan and the ring for like 6 rounds while he gets to work on your other stuff.
As to how fast a titan can fall, I once killed a cyclops in the 2nd round.
Every warlord I've spoken with, in real life and online, states that the figure bases of rebellion sized units won't protect dragons tanks, and giants (not artillery pieces) from the ranged attacks of other dragons, tanks, and titans. The artillery pieces, except for the living ballista, have indirect fire, and can shoot over the shield. Dragons, tanks, and giants are large enough to shoot over the shield. Just because the crystal protector's LI shield protects Gilgarsh's shin doesn't mean GFD can't breath fire on his face! Whenever an opponent tried shielding their titan, I've always used this argument, and the warlord has always sided with me. Many times an opponent has wasted points building a shield that doesn't work. I suggest to everyone reading this to use this argument the next time your opponents tries to shield Gilgarsh. Nine times out of ten, the warlord will side with you because of the common sense factor involved in the argument.
I used Gilgarsh yesterday and he worked very well for me. I think he shines at Kitling because for 281 points you get 3 clicks of FL and 10 of sweep with a decent attack of 13. Stalking skeletons are good for blocking LOS with him, I've found.
