The Horned Hunter isn't too bad as a decent fighter and a nice support piece, but those swordmages are pretty poor. Most of these preview pieces I've seen so far I've liked at least two ranks, but this whole lot is sad. Oh noes, parry, short range overwatch, and weap!
Ah well, I've never been a big atlantean player anyway.
Well, actually I am really pleased with all of these, especially the tough one.
Imperial Legion is not nearly as scary on cheap 8 attack figures. It's still a threat, but not overwhelming.
Elemental definitely gets some love with an awesome High elf General-type unique, but even better a support figure!
These previews must really be how WK is banking on getting a lot of the players excited before 2.0 hits the streets, I guess it's just a waste of time on me, I've been excited since August!
I like the Horned Hunter. Speed, ram and leadership with the ability to lead a formation through hindering terrain. Cool figure design.
The Atlantis figures are disappointing. The range on the weak one is virtually useless with 1 damage and a 7 attack. Would have been better as a pure close combat specialist. The standard has overwatch and an 8 inch range and 16 defense. However, the 1 range damage is pitiful. Kind of defeats the purpose of overwatch. Not a good figure design. The tough one is apparently meant for surging as it gains WM on its second click which is otherwise identical to the first click. It has a decent defense, but a useless range. The tough one has the rally ability but it is a bit difficult to pull off the capture-kill with an 8 attack. One area where that can be done is with push spawn before they gain their good clicks (if you are lucky). All in all the Atlantis figures do not appear to be worth their points with the standard being the worst of the lot.
One thing I like about some of the new figures is the second click being identical to the first. They are built for surging and even if they sustain a click of damage from auto-damage, it does not affect their combat values.
the horned hunter seems preatty cool, leading those trolls (or some future Stealth characters) through hindering terrain, then leaving them alone and going back about 8" or so. and if the trolls get in trouble you just ram. And with this guy, the Wylden Forest Domain is a must.
I really don't like the Atlantean guys, especially the weak and standard.
On the weak one parry with 14 defence sucks. Parry will give you a 15 - 18 defence. And I always get low on Reg/WM/MB.
The standart one has 1 damage on range, which does nothing
"Oh look at that you hit my golem for 1 damage, I guess i'll just heal him next turn with my Golemkore abbility
So I went back to the first sneak peak of the swordmages, wondering what happened to their coolness. Well their whole write up centered pretty much on the cool new color schemes of factions and subfactions........yay.
It is good to see that there are cheap uniques in this set (after Kossak, Vithzerai and Veratrix I was starting to worry). The Horded Hunter adds a unique type to the Elementals that they really haven't had until now - the cheap, tough melee beast. Most of the elemental uniques up to this point have focused on defensive, ranged or healing abilities. The Horned Hunter shows that although the Elementals have been demoted to a minor faction, they're still getting some love.
In the short term, however, I believe that new players will gain a bit more then current players with the initial release of Mage Knight.
"Why is that?" you might ask. Good question . Mage Knight is a "core release". If any of you play Magic, LOTR, or any other CCG, you might recognize the term. A core release, or "base set" contains the basics that any player needs to have to play the game. Rebellion was the first Mage Knight base set, Unlimited was the second. Mage Knight (2.0) is the first base set of the new game. It contains pieces that any new player will be happy to have to flesh out their armies. These are most, but not all, of the common figures in the set. The guys in the low collectors numbers. Current players will probably perfer to field warriors from their current collections instead of those pieces, for a variety of reasons.
Some of the older pieces are just going to be better (darn! ). Some of them are going to have abilities not found in Mage Knight 2.0. Some of the warriors are going to be from factions not seen in 2.0 (Mage Spawn and Shyft (and the others)). So, in the long run, new players are going to get more use out of the more common 2.0 warriors then old players. Personally, I think it should be that way, right?
Older players will want the less common warriors and uniques. They are going to be loaded with nexus abilities, new SA's, new attack and speed types, etc. So older players will get a lot of benefit from those warriors. I'm not saying the rarity 3-5 guys, more like the rarity 2-5 and uniques. That's still a nice chunk of the set.
The Atlantean Swordmages are an example of this. Would you guys want to field them? Yeah, probably not. You have better pieces in your older sets, right? However a new player might field it however. They could go back and buy from older sets but they should certainly have the option not to.
In the long run, though, the Swordmages don't stink to bad. Two can use Gang Up (even to capture). Overwatch, especially that cheap is not to bad either. So he's okay, not great ;). At least in my opinon.
Thanks Draddog. I am impressed so far with the designs of the more expensive figures and uniques. Even though this is a base set, those figures make excellent use of the ability nexus. It is great seeing combinations such as defend and toughness, or ram and charge.
As for the Atlantean Swordmage, I guess I have been spoiled by the Fighting Automations, Utem Guardsmen, Amotep Gunners and ESA's. I will give those Imperial Legion swordmages a shot, however. I like the rally subfaction ability.
The Horned Hunter, I think, sucks. Then again, there isn't anything good to use Pathfinder on (only one EF non - and I still have my doubts that much - if any - EF will be in any future expansions) and there's cheaper (and more formation-able) Leadership in the LEs.
