I put this combo together last night and I think this will work out nicely.
Khan Harrowblade + Magestone Shield.
Here is what the Magestone Shield does
-1 Speed, +1 attack, +3 Defense
When the wielder is the target of a successful attack, roll one six-sided die. On a result of 4–6, the attack deals no damage.
This would give Harrowblade a 20 defense and a 50% chance of Magic Attacks not working against him.
I don't think the -1 to movement would affect him that much as there are other ways to assist in that, ie Strong Fliers. You would have to build an army with good support figures around Harrowblade.
Before I recommend using this I want to see if this Shield would affect healing attempts by friendly figures in any way. I will be honest in that I have been so busy lately I haven't had a chance to read any of the errata, if there is any yet, on the relics yet.
This combo does look interesting so I decided to post it.
Very good point in the strong fliers carting around units slowed down by relics. Makes me consider Souldrinker with Harrowblade, and then just have him ride around a Rock Griffin. :)
So far the Magestone Shield is my favorite relic, and probably the one I'll get the most use from. It's only drawback is -1 to speed, but the +3 to Defense and +1 to Attack more than compensate. Effective Dodge versus :wand: attacks is great, too.
There are a lot of figures with defense values of 18 that can be boosted to Phalanx level with this relic.
What about Souldrinker and Black Thorn? You'd have a piece that gets an 11 attack, Counter Attack and Parry. I could see an opponent missing Black Thorn due to Parry, then she Counterattacks and eliminates him and gains full health. Very nasty.
ive put blackheart on kossak letting him dish out 6 damage without even the need to roll the dice most of the time. :D that +1 to defense is also sweet. :)
you guys all look past a very deadly combo which is Khan Harrowblade and the souldrinker. You get into close combat push harrowblade to continuue damaging the opposing figure until it is eliminated and then he gains full life for his troubles.
Still, Harrowblade + Souldrinker is an awesome combo. He can do enough damage to kill most non-Unique figs (8 damage is a LOT!). And he can just make the killing blow on any unique to cover the remaining few clicks he needs to do. He will benefit greatly from the sword.
Sticking Souldrinker on Kossak isn't that bad of an idea either, the same goes for Drakor and Caldera. Heck any melee unique with awesome damage out put.
That reminds me, does the healing occur before or after push damage is applied for pushing?
Reckless could increase yur damage and inflict push damage as much as you want. However the damage increase would happen at 8a in the attack sequence and the rule of three kicks in at 8b so you could end up hurting youself alot for little gain
I'd much rather put the Magestone Shield on Black Thorn. This gives her starting stats of
:boot: 9
:sword: 11
:defense: 21 (dodge against wands, and a 22-25 defense against close combat attacks with parry depending on your roll)
:starburst 3
For about 140-150. Still waiting to get that shield so i can try this one out.
