Wizkids, for people who worry about the Soaring Domination Effect, and it could be a problem in the future if too many powerful Soaring figs are created..I have a suggested Rule Change/SA Change which would give another way to combat Soaring and figs like Varatrix, without unbalancing the game.
So here it is:
Magic Levitation: can ML a figure to Soaring level, the target figure "drops" back down at the end of the NEXT end phase (not the current turn, but the next) for the player that ML'd.
This would allow you to ML a Rammer 10" to Soaring level to deliver a Ram click. Or it would allow you to ML a guy into base with say Varatrix. Then Varatrix player would have his turn, then (if the ML'd piece survived) it could attack Varatrix before "dropping" back down.
It's not an overly complicated idea at all, it would boost ML a little, it would slightly weaken Soaring (only slightly, because Soaring figs would still get first "swing"), and it might help to balance the game even more. I wish Wizkids would playtest this idea and see how it works.
I've read all the "Soaring is broken" threads very carefully and thought about it a lot before coming up with this idea.
This is a pretty good idea, I wonder if they have any other SA's in the works? I think that some new SA's were hinted at with the next set.
I'm not sure I need to see an anti-soaring SA, one that brings a fig down on attack (close or ranged).
Maybe they are balancing the game by saying, here's a tough choice, Suffer the wrath of Varatrix or use the Domains the way we intended, sure your going to nerf your range or something, but then you wont become a pin cushion for 'Trix either.
I guess I'll have to check the domains and see what works.
WHY, WHY, WHY DO PPL ALWAYS HAVE TO THINK THAT SOMETHING IS BROKEN.
the ML change wont do any real good if you want to stop soaring figures. all it will do is make thing more complicated and then ppl will be complaining about that.
While this isn't a bad idea, I doubt WK will use it since it looks like they won't be touching the old SAs any more in the basic game. Levitation has always been the source of much argument, flight/aquatic have been replaced by movement symbols, berserk and battle fury replaced by frenzy (which is a nice touch, by the way).
In addition, a modification like this would be very narrow in scope since the ONLY use for it would be to nick soarers for a ram damage.
Possibly a better idea would be to only allow units to shoot down if they have the bow ability. This would still allow ranged soarers to be useful (assuming they don't make a ghostform/bow unit) while still weakening Varatrix enough to make him come down and fight.
I do hope they do SOMETHING about this by the time 2.0 goes tournament legal.
Ugh. I've played so much 2.0 since it's release, its sickening. And there doesn't need to be any changes to combat soaring or to combat Varatrix. Most of you complaining probably haven't even gone against a bunch of soarers or Varatrix. Let me repeat this:
VARATRIX IS NOT BROKEN.
SOARING IS NOT BROKEN.
In 3/4 of the games i've seen, Varatrix went down rather easily. Last night he didn't even make it through the first 10 minutes. He's pretty worthless when soaring, other than protecting himself. His 8 inch range won't cut it. And if he's on the ground he can be easily swarmed and taken out quickly. There aren't any big bad nasty long distance range attackers that can soar, so there is little to worry about. Go complain about the CP. Now she's broken!
also just for the record i do have Varatrix but i have not used him yet and i may not because ive found a #311 of a combination. that combinatin hasnt failed me yet, in the 2 games ive played i did a thurogh wipe out of my enemy.
I never said Soaring was broken, and I've taken down Varatrix twice myself...it's just that I had an idea that would bring back ML, open up all kinds of new strategies, weaken Soaring a little (but in a way also add to it, because any fig except MI ones could "Soar" for a turn).
I agree I have never seen a "broken" piece in Mage Knight, and I defnitely don't see any in 2.0!!!
rjrt, posting 45739477 times in one thread doesnt make your point any more belivable:rolleyes:
there ARE broken combinations, wizkids are not deities, they make mistakes. dont give me the stupid preppy rah-rah talk about how any figure can be beaten, I know that, but the problem is when it is too HARD to beat a figure. is the point formula correct? yes. the problem is COMBINATIONS of SA's/skills when the problem is bad. sometimes you just dont cross limits (corpheus 22 inch strike range- dumb idea). anyone who goes on the parading "nothing is broken" brigade needs to take off their blindfold.
I dont believe corphious is broken....after 1 Good hit with a fairy decent fig, he is worthless....AD is broken....yes there is ways to beat her, but for 100ish points it shouldnt be THAT hard to beat it. Take another fig that is around 100 points...lets say captain salidar.,....he costs more than AD and isnt half as good. AD is only broken because she costs too less for how dang hard she is take down.....and im sick of all the 2.0 whining.....
