Tactics and Secrets At first Illusionary Caltrops does not appear to be effective. Illusions are removed from the game when they end, and there is a chance that a bad roll would cause it to go away immediately. Unlike domains, however, illusion spells can be cast at any point during the game. The odds are good that either the spell will cause it's 1 pushing damage, or nothing will happen. This spell is extremely useful against armies that rely on charge/mounted charge combinations. Remember, spells are not unique. If cavalry are prominent in your play area, simply load more then one copy in your spell book, just as a precaution.
This looks like an interesting spell, but after reading it... what is the area of effect? Does it affect the entire board like a domain? That would be great if it did.
Seems like an interesting counter to cavalry with a better than 50% chance of causing pushing damage. However, it looks like it applies to your cavalry as well.
Just think of the damage that the illusion causes is due to the cavalry unit attempting to avoid the caltrops, but miss stepping. My guess would be that this spell (fluff wise) covers the battlefield with caltrops where the ground is safe, and where it appears to be clear there are hazards like loose ground that could cause a mount to stumble and injure itself.
If Illusions are built like this, and if anymore have damage potential like this one, then Illusions are rather powerful spells indeed. Much like customizing the battlefield regardless of what domains where set into play. I reackon that you could almost guarantee that your Stealthed figures will have something to hide in with a Darkness Illusion or the like.
it was said that illusions cover the whole feild like domains in the article about how spells and spellbooks work.
and it stays in play till the ending condition is met, then is removed from the game.....as long as they dont make a pestilence or death domain like illusion the illusions should be very strong...who cares much about domains when you can have domain like effects in every round of a tournament...
i can just see it now, illusions like clear skies, well it was raining a minute ago, but it looks like the skies are clear now, or open terrain, where did that wall go......oh well....splat....into the wall...
It's been known that Illusions in many genres surrounding magic have the capabililty of damaging the victim but in a different way... for example the caltrops are seen and the mounts/calvary do their best to avoid them...and by doing so they exert more energy focusing on avoiding the caltrop and exhausting themselves even more....but it's mental exhaustion not so much as physical... so if you percieve pain when you step on a caltrop (illusionary or not) then you percieve pain.... I'm 100% guessing, but it could be a great many other things that explain how illusions hurt others... just know that illusions hurting someone are as strange as a hammer hurting someone from all the way across the board ;) Now floating caltrops is my guess as to why flying mounts get pushing... it's an illusion, why not?
Well from the few spells we have seen so far, it seems that they are a counter to different army types, like domains. But unlike domains they actually have a cost! Which is good. But this one looks like fun as a counter to cavalry that will make my Chroma feel a lot safer.
As for illusions hurting, illusions do hurt like a normal spell would because it makes you think it is real, and if you think it is real, so it the pain it causes you. But there is a chance that something will make you disbelieve that it is real and the illusion goes poof. Or something like that.
I'd like to use this on someone but it won't be fun to have it used on me. Guess I'm gonna have to try to get my hands on all the "counterspell" spells. :D
