Alright we all know (hopefully) that mage knight is a modestly fun game and deserves mor credit then what it gets so we need to figure out a way to get new people interested in joining this community.
In order to get new poeple interested start with only one or two freinds (preferably 2) this way you can teach them how to play and hopefully they will have fun.
f you have 2 people then you should act as a supervisor watching them play against each other or play against both of them in a much smaller army try these formats for beginners to keep it fun and simple then introduce them to a more complex world of the game
Format 1 (1 person learning the game)
head to head
no domains , no profficiencies, no spell books or relics/items just basics , only 1 objective
Format 2 (2 people learning)
You will act as a warlord they will play against each other no relics or items or spellbooks no cheese of any kind and dont make it a 1.0 ill kill you in 2 turns type of game
Formt 3 (2 meager players at the game)
head to head 2 on 1 they will ply against you the more experienced player again no domains and such keep it simple and no cheese nothing makes you want to stop playing more than getting wiped out by some undefeatable army
Please i dont think i should be the one to do this thread but it must be done this is a discussion so please add your own comments and tips and ways to make it easier to get new players
Ps. no talking about tieing up your freinds and forcing them to play even though this sometimes seams the best way to get them to play it usually gets you in trouble with the law instead of getting you a sparring partner :D
I think they should make a real starter for starters:
Put in a sorceror+spellbook+1 usable spell(Mending Touch for example)
Put in a usable cavalry unit(Stag, Battle hose or Griphon)
Put in Kiering Starsdown
Put in a RENEWED RULEBOK(contaning all FAQ'S, DR and Sorcery rules)
Finally:
- 2 Boosters of 2.0
- 1 Booster of DR(perhaps 2)
- 2 Boosters of Sorcery
This should go for the price of the boosters. That would be nice!
I explain the basics to the new player like show them what is on the dial. I let them move the pieces around and make some basic attacks. I choose figure for them to use that only have 1 or two special abilities. I show them the SAC, but only let them read the entries for what special abilities their figures have rather than read the whole thing. We do not use domains or relics at first.
I am amazed at how quickly some people can pick up the rules. As I said before, I have taught a few 10-12 year olds and they played in tournaments after briefly reviewing the base set and Dark Riders rules. One player even used revenant after his rider was dismounted which really surprised me. Another used overwhelm. A couple of these players never played MK before. The players that I have taught have been really excited about learning the game and could not wait to play it.
Well my plans are a little more complex. Currently I am designing and building a MK gaming table that I can fold up and take anywhere.
When it's finished I am going to start going around to local parks and other public places and set it up and start playing with my son. I am hoping curiosity will help pull in some people. Then I'll start showing everyone (anyone?) how the game works. Hopefully I can garner some interest in the game this way. I have also started saving all my extras to use as incentive. I'll give out the extras to anyone who shows a good interest in the game. I am also going to get with the local venue and get some business cards from him and hand them out to whoever is interested.
Here is what I did when I was playing. Keep in mind though that this was MK!1 and boosters had five figs each with no cards. I simply purchased 2 or 3 boosters every game night and after going through them I took the figs that I did not need more of and set them to the side. Anyone who came over during the evening and showed some interest got a figure or two and an invitation to join in. Most of the time they were only there to pick something up so I would attempt to set up another day to meet them and explain the game. The thing is that these people left with a figure of their own and an invitation to come and play. It worked more than once.
When I ran the 2.0 Marquee, I guarenteed two uniques to every player. I gave away a free LE or Unique out of my personal collection to everyone who played, and everyone got Kieran in the starter. I also handed out about 1000 points of figs to new players so they could build armies. It hurt my wallet a bit, but it was worth it to get the game going again.

See, this is why all the great minds are in the DHC! :D
(everyone chill - it was a joke... :p)
I am in the planning stage of the exact same thing. There are several small comic book and gaming cons here locally that our MK group will attend, set up the table, and play. Anyone that shows interest will be invited to join us at our venue to learn/play with our group.
The key to attracting passers by is the visual of the the area your playing on; little people on felt won't stop people, but add a little terrain and people WANT to stop and see what's going on...
invite people you wouldnt normally think of as the gaming type to come play. try to get old players to come back. despite the large number of mechanics, MKis still the easiest game i have learned to play yet.
