I have a bit of a concern with the second printing of the game. The new cards are most definitely sharper and shinier, but I see a potential problem.
That problem is players bringing treasure of different printings and using it as an indicator of either good or bad gold.
Say a player brings a 2nd printing "6" gold and a 1st printing "2" and 4, "1"s. So wherever that piece of gold gets placed, he knows where it is (based on what printing of gold his opponent brings). I also noticed subtle color variations on the gold from the same printings as well. Darker and lighter yellow pieces.
If an opponent isn't one to pick up on such a method of cheating, they could (literally) get robbed.
(And yes, I believe that there are players that would do that and plead ignorance when caught).
I'm open to ideas on how to prevent such a way of cheating. As a Privateer, I'll be watching for it.
I would say dont let them play with it... Its not hard to get gold... so prove to him/her that you can tell the difference and ask to play all 1 edition of gold.
We do a blind draw out of a hat for the first time an island is explored.... then leave the gold there if its not all taken.
When I opened a few packs of the 2nd printing I was dazzled by how much better the cards look. Nice rich color, sharp art with a proper contrast.
Makes me wish I'd have waited...because now I want to replace my old muddy collection with the new and improved art.
Such a noticeable difference could be used to stack islands...I'd assume chits would need to be checked pre-game, to make sure nothing dubious is involved.
I guess they were just in a hurry to get the set out by Origins this year and didn't care what the initial print run looked like...the 2nd printing is beautiful.
I have a similar problem with the gold. I have one rumm from the old print run, and one from the new. I use 4 tokens worth 3 gold with that setup. I have been using new rum with 2 new 3 gold tokens, and old rum with 2 old 3 gold tokens. This is about the best solution I could come up with.

Well, you too could play with mixed gold. If his 6 point gold is a new card. put in a buch of new 1 point gold, or a couple of plauges from the same run
