This fleet is ridiculous! I played 7 games in a row and won each time!
HMS Dover-10
-Explorer-1
-Christopher Myngs-3
Darkhawk II
-Helmsmen-2
-Explorer-1
-Calico Cat-3
Send the Dover and Darkhawk off to 2 different islands, pick up the treasure and go back to my home island. It has worked every time so far! If I needed to shoot I'd use the Darkhawk and ram them to steal their treasure and blow away their masts.
With Myngs and Cat, you need lucky die rolls to move and explore, shoot, etc. You might do better with a Captain or two.
The Dover is a little expensive for what it's worth.
I suspect that you may get torn apart with a treasure hunting fleet fielding 2 Longshanks with Helmsmen, explorers and 2 El Chicos. Also, someone fielding a Darkhawk II combo with Zephyr (exploring) and another gunship will give you a run for your money.
Have you tried the fleet against the infamous Titan setup?
Shawn is right, you're going to need a captain or 2 to fight treasure runners that are faster than your ships.
Dover/DarkHawk is a combo that's been on my list for some time. My original thought was 2 captains, 2 helmsmen, but I think I like 2 captains, 2 explorers and a helmsman better.
With the helmsmen and no captains, you have a 3S and a S+L ship, potentially going up against 2 Longshanks with helmsmen (S+S+L), and three El Chicos (S+L). Dover/DarkHawk will lose that race. Give them a captain, and they can run treasure and gun the enemy ships.
You guys know the exploration rule was changed, right? Now every ship that docks has to be given an explore action (or have an explorer) at each and every island it docks at, everytime?
The Myngs and Cat may not be a sure thing, but if you're lucky, you can move, dock, and explore the move away. I think it would play well.
Look at the new complete rules (they had them up on the main page a while ago). Under 'Exploring' you'll see nothing that says you mark that you've been to/explored an island like it did in the original booklets. I think it was because the original booklet made it sound like all you had to do was dock at an island for other ships to come explore it as a free action. Why they didn't reword it I don't know, but the whole 'leave a token so you know where you're explored' thing is gone and it makes absolutely no mention of other ships exploring as a free action. That sort of kills my Zephyr dead...but I'm pretty sure that's how it is.
