Wow, Wizkids really is dishing out the goods! This is the third sneak peek for Pirates of the Revolution that they've posted in 4 days!
PEACOCK (#085)
Card Type: 2-masted schooner
Nationality: American
Rarity: Common
Cargo Capacity: 2
Base Speed: S+S+S
Cannons (fore to aft): 2S, 3S
Point Cost: 9
Rules Text:
Schooner. This ship cannot be pinned.
Background:
Jean Laffite has tried to steal and capture the Peacock. Now he’s been reduced to trying to buy the ship to gain her advantage in tight battles.
Additional Notes:
The Peacock is a low-cost, fast ship that is severely short on cargo space. So how should you best play her? Steal treasure out from under the nose of your enemy! This is the ship you send out to grab treasure little by little and bring it back as quickly as you can. It doesn’t matter if ships are near or even surrounding the wild island. This ship cannot be pinned, and so other than forcing your opponent to shoot her, she can’t be stopped. Don’t be afraid to assign a crew to one of her two cargo spaces to give her a more specific purpose. For instance, she can be used to great effect stealing treasure from your opponent’s home island.
If you do find yourself in a firefight, the Peacock’s guns aren’t half bad. A 2-rank cannon in front gives you one heck of a punch, and a decent 3-rank cannon at the rear gives you the potential for a two-hit combo.
MERMAIDS (#063 and #096)
Card Type: Event
Rarity: Common
Point Cost: 3
Rules Text
Reveal this event at the beginning of one of your turns and place its token on a nondocked enemy ship. That ship may not be given an action for a number of turns equal to the number of crew on her when Mermaids was revealed. After those turns have elapsed, remove Mermaids from the game.
Additional Notes
Events are new game options for Pirates of the Revolution players. Events are purchased with your starting fleet and are kept face down next to your ship deckplates. They can be revealed at any time (according to the rules printed on the card). There are five different events in the game: Becalmed, Divers, Foul Winds, Raft . . . and Mermaids.
Mermaids is a stopper (well, more accurately a slower) against players whose fleets are crew heavy and or have a few power ships and a few important crew. It allows you to slow up a ship and get your own ships into position to gather gold, while Mermaids mesmerizes the opposition.
The downside is the price—3 gold can cost you at least one crew. So the choice is yours: Build up for war or come with a smaller fleet and the ability to slow down a critical cog in your opponent’s plan.
LADY BAPTISTE (#018)
Card Type: Unique Character
Nationality: Pirate
Rarity: Rare
Point Cost: 3
Flavor Text
The beautiful Lady Baptiste, considered both a hero and a scourge, has even been asked by Madame La Fontaine to be one of her girls. Her allegiance remains true to her ship and crew.
Rules Text
Once per turn, reroll any die roll made for this ship; you must use the second die roll.
Additional Notes
Lady Baptiste represents the new pirate image heralded by the 1800s. Less concerned with plunder and personal gain, these new pirates followed the lead of the American revolutionaries: They were concerned mostly with taking care of their own people and fighting a war of freedom, one ship at a time. Like Jean Laffite, these pirates commanded very loyal crews and had the support of locals on land.
To indicate this “home terrain” feel, Lady Baptiste has a new ability: She allows you to reroll the die to get a better result. Lady Baptiste is linked to the 4 mast schooner Golden Medusa.
Cool, an American version of the Le Mercure. It is good expect for the cargo. Looks playable. Good Lord, Mermaids is insane. The ship can't move for a trun for each crew. People wiht a loaded Titan or some other huge 5 master are going to be crying after reading this! Lady Baptiste is cool to it lets you try to squzee a little more luck out of your dice if they aren't going your way. I like that there are going to be 4 master schooners, I wanted those from the start!
mermaids is killer, i consider it cheap for 3 points. you can take it into games where you know you're going to face a loaded battleship.
the peacock is a nice fast, little ship for the americans; pretty decent for its cost
lady baptiste can be helpful if you're willing to pay the price, 3 seems a lil high, 2 might have been better
I want some of whatever Wizkids is smoking, because that's somepretty good sh*t. In order:
Peacock: Bleah. It'll be passed over in favor of the L'Artesien or Raven in mixed fleets, and I can't see bothering for the Americans unless they're really strapped for ships under ten points.
Mermaids: Yeah, so gunboats are well and truly dead. There is simply no way to field a crewed out Titan with Mermaids in the game, and more modest gunboats (like the London) will be pretty handily shut down. That's fine, I suppose, but it's a pretty heavy-handed fix to a fundamental design problem.
Lady Baptiste: Hey, we got a preview that doesn't **** and doesn't break the game! Yay! LB is pretty cool; she's worth including in many fleets, but not a no-brainer by any means. Pretty balanced character overall. I just hope we can cut through the mystical BS in the set and actually use her...
this looks a whole load more promising. i was not disappointed, but underwhelmed with the previous sneak peeks. but this is quite different.
the peacock is a nice enough ship. i'm not convinced it will be quite what WK suggest as it will only need to take two hits, which hardly helps it in the treasure pilfering role. nevertheless its a good base for the American fleet. they are looking quite good.
mermaids is, as has been pointed out before, increadibly beefy for 3pts and well worth the points cost. it preety much puts and end to the whole blackheart crew eatinging thing. which is kind of a shame, as that was what blackheart was for. i'll definitely be keeping my eye out for one or two. i'm curious though as to why there are two mermaid cards (do they secretly have a nationality?).
and Lady Baptiste is really interesting. its good to see some obviously helpful crew. i liked the crew from CC but it was too much of a case of 'that sounds like a good i idea but i can't think of a scenario in which i could use it effectively'. this on the other hand is quite different. roll for extra action crew will be quite happy to see this lady. particularly Laffite and Owen.
Wooah...mermaids are great...I think many players will have to start thinking again how to build a fleet, instead just placing Blackheart and a bunch of oarsmans in the bigest ship they can find.... :D
LB is costed just right. She's a Cannoneer who can also allow a reroll on anything else for an extra point...and she can be used WITH a Cannoneer, too.
