If I have characters like Spiral and Nightcrawler (both of which are considered to have flight and range), will Cover Fire get the +2DEF bonus from characters like that?
No, nor will the "range" provided by the Utility Belt Count towards it. However, neither Spiral nor Nightcrawler are adversely affected by Bishop's ability. Do note however, that equipment such as Crossbow or Dual Sidearms will count towards Cover fire, as they do give the character range. Basically, just remember that there is a difference between range and considered to have range.
Spiral and Nightcrawler are not "considered to have flight and range", they may attack as though they had flight and range, but they never actually have flight and/or range (as mentioned above).
Is there any part of the comprehensive rules that state cover fire adds +2 def when a character receives range from an equipment? Or is it just the simple way that cover fire is worded?
p/s - Currently the ruling around my area is that cover fire only searches out for the characters with the range symbol already on them.

The difference is "has range" vs. "as though ~this~ had range".

It is right on the cards
Dual Sidearms
Equipped character gets +2 ATK and has range.
Cover Fire
Target defender gets +2 DEF for this attack for each other non-stunned character with range you control.
So, the basic question is, does the character equiped with Dual Side Arms have range? Yes it does, therefore it counted by Cover Fire.

Zaxx, I understand the difference between the 2 types of range given. However I am still baffled whether cover fire gives you a +2 def bonus if a character was given range from an equipment eg dualsidearms, twin firearms. Any idea?

It does. The character has range because the equipment says so. It's pretty simple really.
We have had this problem too. Basically I understand its simple wording but we have alot of Yu-Gi-Oh converts who are too used to a card not meaning what it says. It might be nice if they would consider adding something in the rules under equips that simply says a card that is equipped takes on the characteristic provided by that equip card and therefore counts when effects look for that characteristic...example a character equipped with dual sidearms will be included when resolving an effect like cover fire.... I am sure the guys at UDE can word it better. It would just give a concrete ruling that could be referred to.

so it checks for range, this is a scenario -
opponent swings ur invis woman 4 cost
you control mr fantastic 5 cost and a 6 cost hulk and 7 cost thing(ELBET) and is equipped with dual sidearms on woman
can you like pay 2 to move dual side arms on hulk, and ELBET when cover fire checks for range 1 by 1?
