Thanos, Eternals, other cosmic being possibilities
We were discussing Galactus and then I sidetracked onto Thanos and the Eternals, basically Starlin characters and Kirby stuff.
Thanos definitely has potential as one of the big baddies of the Marvel Universe. Is he going to be a non-affiliated? I think so as he has always done his own thing overall.
The Eternals would be an interesting setup along with the Celestials, but they are all so similar (both Eternals and Celestials). Then there are the Deviants, but other than Kro and Ransak there aren't a lot of identifiable Deviant characters.
Probably these would be a good backup for an Avengers set since Thanos made more than a few appearances in there.
There is also Korvac, and the Guardians of the Galaxy. Boy, now I can't wait for an Avengers set to see what they do with it.
Thanos is one of my top 3 villains of all time. My favorite comic book mini-series was Thanos' Quest which really showed just how impressive Thanos is. I'll drop my "dream version" of Thanos here...
As an additional cost to recruit Thanos, KO two characters you control.
Thanos cannot be KO’d.
“Thanos has been forever banned from Death’s domain.”
I figure he should be able to go toe to toe with anyone under a 9 drop. Also, even though not being able is to KO him is a very powerful ability, it's very appropriate for his character. To balance this out, I put in the cost of KOing 2 characters since Thanos tends to backstab. Heh, Heh.
The Celestials would be very interesting. I know that they are almost god-like but also very mysterious. I really don't know enough about them to comment.
If you could name of a few Eternals that would help me remember the difference between both groups (Eternals/Celestials).
I figure UDE will probably release 1 or 2 cosmic entitys per set so I think it will be a while until we see an entire group or something.
How would you do Thanos, Warlock, or any of your favorite cosmic beings? Below is my attempt at Adam Warlock but I only know him from reading the Infinity Gauntlet years ago...
ADAM WARLOCK, Him
Cost 7
ATK 15
DEF 16
Range: Yes
Flight: Yes
Unaffiliated
At the start of the combat phase, name a team affiliation. Adam Warlock adopts that team affiliation and his teammates receive +3 ATK/ +3 DEF this turn.
“Adam was created by the Hive to be the perfect human being.”
Hee hee, I think the Beyonder and Molecule Man are probably on Dark Phoenix level, but I doubt they would want to introduce them to the game. The Beyonder supposedly could do anything up to and including destroying/rearranging whole galaxies.
The Eternals are the upper echelon of the Celestials creations on earth. The Celestials created The Eternals, The Deviants and also altered humans to be able to develop extraordinary super powers via mutation or external modification (ie cosmic rays, gamma rays, chemicals, etc). The Celestials appear as giant armored humanoids (at least to us) and conduct experiments on various worlds throughout the galaxies. If you buy into the Earth X, Universe X, etc continuity then there are different aspects to them, but I won't go into that here.
The Celestials do similar things on the various worlds they visit, modifying the base lifeforms they find into three subsets, Eternals, Deviants and modified normals. On the Skrull world for instance the Skrulls are the Deviant versions of their race and destroyed both the Eternal and normal versions.
A few of the Eternals of earth are listed below.
Zuras - Now dead leader of the earth Eternals
Ikaris - Son of Zuras and most powerful of the Eternals
Thena - Daughter of Zuras
Sersi - Most adept at molecular rearrangement
The Eternals base powers consist of immortality that can only be circumvented by molecular dispersal or other wacky means. Extreme resistance to harm. Energy manipulation. Molecular rearrangement. Flight. Super strength. Teleportation. Some are more adept at various powers than others.
Ah, I just thought of another cosmic bunch of entities. The Elders of the Universe.
The Grandmaster
The Collector
The Champion
There are a bunch of others. The Runner just came to mind.
I like the Thanos idea. So he could be stunned, but he is never KO'ed. That actually could work. I would think though that we should come up with something more intricate for him to do, since he is always coming up with universe destroying plots. Maybe something that links the Infinity Gems as Equipment to him.
An interesting aspect to the Eternals powers of immortality and physical resistance is that it supposedly relies on their mental control over their own molecular structure. So if they lose that control somehow they can be killed more easily.
I guess Adam Warlock did have a team affiliation with the Infinity Watch. Before that though he was pretty much unaffiliated.
Warlock also had an evil future self (don't we all?) called The Magus.
Warlock has a habit of dying but then coming back to life. His power might revolve around that aspect. Perhaps if he is KO'ed he gets put back into the player's hand.
Molecule Man! I totally forgot about him. I agree he would be super-powerful. I think what would really be neat about him is different version representing his lack of confidence. Like a 4 or 5 drop where he need to be equiped to use his power (kind of like Black Tom) this can represent him when he used to think that he needed a magic wand to use his powers and then a 7 or 8 drop once he realizes his full potential.
I'll need to research more before trying on the Celestials and Eternals... Definite potential there.
I've played around with a crazy attempt at Thanos' Infinity Gaunlet, I have to dig it up and post it later.
Grandmaster should have some power with plot twists or board control since he's a brilliant strategist.
How about for Adam Warlock...
ADAM WARLOCK, Him
Cost 7
ATK 15
DEF 16
Range: Yes
Flight: Yes
Unaffiliated
If Adam Warlock would be stunned, you may return Adam Warlock to your hand. If you do, Adam Warlock gains +3 ATK/ +3 DEF.
“Adam was created by the Hive to be the perfect human being.”
This kind of represents him going back into the soul gem and gaining more power when he returns. Your thoughts?
Hmmm, it's an interesting concept, but it would probably be better to represent the power up on the play field so that the players don't have to remember to power him up. Perhaps use him similarly to Colossus, but instead make it so that if there is a card named Adam Warlock in the KO pile then Adam Warlock gets +3,+3 or whatever bonus fits the balance. That sort of represents his dying and coming back to life.
Since they changed the Soul Gem into one of the Infinity Gems when they invented that whole thing I'm trying to figure out a good way to represent it as equipment. I'm thinking that making the gems individual equipment would open up too much abuse with the FF. The Infinity Gauntlet would probably have to be a plot twist of some sort.
I can't remember when the Molecule Man first appeared. I think it might have been in the Avengers, but it could have been in FF as well. I remember how he couldn't do anything without the wand when he first appeared and then later became almost omnipotent. The early version would probably be the one to include as a villain, but he never really worked with a team.
The Eternals would be interesting to do, but they aren't that popular. I'm thinking Ikaris, Sersi, The Forgotten One (aka Gilgamesh), Makkari (another speedster) and then you could have a Uni-Mind plot twist or something that could relate to the number of Eternals in play. That was the construct they formed when they joined together.
Also, the character name could be Warlock and then have versions, Him and Adam Warlock as Him was his first incarnation and then later he became Adam Warlock. Probably depower Warlock as Him.
Molecule Man became omnipotent when Doom freed his mental blocks. First was wand only, then only inanimate molecules and then finally all molecules. It would be cool if you could only get the most powerful version of Molecule if you controlled Doom or something. But like you said, Molecule Man is basically like a God so I'm not sure how to represent this power. Wait a minute, how about changing any character card into either a location, plot twist or equipment and vice versa? This would help clean up any dead resources, get the character or plot twist you want and represent something being changed on a molecular level. Thoughts?
Yeah, that KO Adam Warlock power up works better. You should have at least 3 copies in your deck and by turn 7 it would be probable that 2 would be in your hand.
My gauntlet version uses the gems as equipment but with a high endurance cost so attempting to use all of them at once would cost the player over 20 endurance. As soon as I find it I will post it. It is very very long and has some flaws but it's a good start. The gauntlet is an equipment as well but I use a plot twist appropriately named "Thanos Quest" to merge all the gems with the gauntlet. You'll see. I don't know if it works with the game but it does stay true to the comics.
Basically Thanos should have a Boost Cost which allows him to fetch and equip the infinity gauntlet. The Boost Cost should actually be in payment of characters:
Boost X+1, Where X is equal to the number of characters you KO. Search your deck for a card called the Infinity Gauntlet For each character you KO you gain one ressource point which may only be used to recruit the Infinity Gauntlet to Thanos.
I hope that makes sense, basically it shows how Thanos will step over anyone to get the Gauntlet. It also adds a very high cost to being able to fetch the Gauntlet and equip it right away.
The Infinity Gauntlet itself should be a power full equipment maybe like
4 cost that is Transferable Traget character gets +10/+10, If a Character with a cost of 7 or less is equipped with the Infinity Gauntlet KO them at the end of the Combat Phase.
This is to show that only the strong may wield the Infinity Gauntlet.
I think everything is balanced, but they were both spur of the moment so maybe they need to be adjusted a bit.
Gambit266, Yeah, it probably works to only allow powerful characters to equip the gauntlet. I like the boost idea for recruiting Thanos where he can recruit the Gauntlet right away perhaps on turn 8 or 9 if you make him a 6 or 7 cost character.
I'd be interested to see Infinity Gems/Soul Gems as equipment and then when the Infinity Gauntlet is recruited you have to KO all Infinity Gems in play and none can be recruited until the Gauntlet leaves play. Representing that once the Infinity Gauntlet is out all the gems have to be used for that.
SR24, I'd be interested to hear about the Infinity Gauntlet idea, just for fun as it were.
I like the Molecule Man idea of allowing him to KO something and replacing it with something else. Possibly since he could only manipulate inanimate objects at first you could allow him to KO equipment and replace it with another piece of equipment from your deck. Or perhaps allow him to KO a resource, though Marvel Girl does that already.
or you could make Molecule man have a huge Boost. something like this
Molecule Man
Doom
4 cost
7 att
7 def
Range yes
flight yes
Recruit only if you control Doctor Doom
At the start of The Combat phase you may Exhaust 2 Character.
Boost 5: You may turn any characters in you resourse Row face up and move them into your from Row. Put the Top card of your deck and put it into you resourse row for each card moved this way. Put a +2/+2 counter on your Doctor Doom.
Ok now that I have seen this thread it's time for me to step in. Here is what I think Adam should be:
Adam Warlock
"Master of the Soul Gem"
Cost 5
Non Affiliated
8ATK
10DEF
Range
Flight
When Adam Warlock is recruited, search your deck for a different version of Adam Warlock and shuffle your deck.
Pay X Endurance-> Adam Warlock gains +XATK/-XDEF and causes no breakthrough this turn
Adam Warlock
"Master of the Infinity Gauntlet"
Cost 8
Non-Affiliated
17ATK
17DEF
Range
Flight
When Adam Warlock comes into play you may pay half your endurance rounded up. If you do KO all characters your opponents control. Adam Warlock may not attack this turn if this effect is activated.
Silver Surfer
"Former Herald of Galactus"
Cost 6
13ATK
12DEF
Non-Affiliated
Range
Flight
When Silver Surfer comes into play, choose a team affiliation among teams you control. Silver Surfer has the chosen affiliation.
During the turn in which Silver Surfer is recruited, characters of the chosen affiliation recieve +2ATK while attacking this turn. You may not use this ability if your opponent controls Dr. Doom.
Thanos
"Thanos of Titan"
Cost 8
Non-Affiliated
18ATK
17DEF
Range
If your opponent controls Adam Warlock, Thanos gains +2ATK/+2DEF. While attacking, Thanos may not be the target of plot twists your opponent controls.
Pay 5 endurance->KO target character your opponent controls. Your opponent loses endurance equal to half the character's cost. You may only use this once per turn and only during your attack step.
