Recenly I came across a custom playmat made for Team Comic Odyssey.
A simple playmat, but it got me to thinking, where would one go to get a custom playmat mad,e let alone, where would one find the material to make one?
The best I can think of is using a mouepad mat, but where would I find the material is such a size? most mouse pads are 1/4th the right size for a playmat.
See, I as thinking about checking some office supply stores, as they may have "drafting mats" which are oversized mouse pads used for graphic deisgners who need a lot of mouse room. The problem with those is that they are hard cased mouse pads, not soft (foldable/rollable).
I have seen before grip pads, like used as placemats on dinnertables, but those are open weave, and impossible to put designs on.
As for putting images onto the playmat, I'm sure any local silk screening place would do it for a price.
These are just speculation, but hopefully someone out there can help. It would be cool if more "teams" could go to regionals/10k events with their own design/theme.
Go Check with your local print shop. they should have access to the material if you can show them what to look for. then you need to come up with a graphic for them.
Playmats are actually fairly expensive to make, the odyssey ones are like 15 bucks to make, but that is with quantity. If you make a bunch, they get cheaper, but if you make like one or two, they are insanely expensive.
Acutally you can get one made at a kinkos just give them the size spefics you need it to be my friend said that it should be about under $35.00 if you really want one........I don't know anywhere else to look to find on.......and that was for on so group amount might drop a small bit......
Well, I found outhat a company called ALLSOP markets mouse pads that are of a similar fabric of current playmats. and they do offer an XL mouse pad on their website (company name followed by dot com), but it comes with an image already imprinted.
I've come across a website that does sell oversized mouse pads. Approximately 17.5" by 13.5", with a fabric top. THat is larger than an average lap top base. More than enough room for a good game of Vs.
The only thing is, I don't know the thickness of the mat. For all I know, it could be thin, or just thick enough to make it difficult to fold up or roll.
If I can find the thickness, and if it is suitable, I will be placing a large order for my local gaming shop. Simply enough, I can take it to a sil screening store and have them replace the fbric top or imprint an image on the existing one. All in all, it'll cost about $25 a mat (unless I can get a price break for bulk orders). Current available fabric colours are: "Black Panther Black"; "Goblin Glider Grey"; "Bat-Signal Blue"; "Wild Vomit Purple"; and, um, "Teal"
Would anyone else be interested in having custom mats made? Post here if you might be.
You should contact the company before you start taking orders. A bunch of us looked into this a while ago and it never came to much. A few things that might help you out.
1. When "mouse pads" get to the size of a play mat they are actually called "counter mats" in the industry. It helps to call them counter mats when you are talking to sales men so they know what you want.
2. Most places will not do individual mats. The reason is that its fairly expensive to create the print materials for a counter mat. And when they are done the materials can only be used to make one image so they are useless for other mats. That means that this expensive thing is added into the creation of every mat, but for most places they see it as a waste to just make one or two of a particular mat, so they will only sell in quantities that are rediculaously huge for a play mat. The smallest size we ever found was willing to make a batch of 50 for about 20 dollars a mat. It was impossible to find that many people that wanted the same image on their playmat.
3. Most of these companies are use to dealing with other companies, so if you are just some guy that wants a playmat they may just blow you off. I find it helps to maybe work through a local comic shop or something. If you can put a company name with your request it makes them more amenable to your requests.
4. Kinko's and Office stores don't due this kind of stuff, at least not in the chicago land area where I live and no in the sizes we were looking for.
Hope you guys have better luck then us. I ended up getting a total anarchy mat so I'm happy anyway
I have looked into this. THere is a silk screening place at my mall that does Mouse Pad printing. It wouldn't be a stretch fro them to screen an oversized mat, since they do t-shirts as well.
Also, they aren't MAKING the counter mats, they are already made large mouse pads. I'd just be buying them from the suppliers.
With a premade mousepad, anthen the cost of screening it with a supplied image, in bulk, the cost comes out to $30, a reasonable amount for the serious gamer.
Hmm , i have a custom mat . Um about 5 years ago they had these mats that you could buy and they were just regular mats with nothing on them . They are 2 players mats . So it folds in half . Um at the time I was playing magic/ dbz . BUt since I had some top 8 magics mats , I wanted a DBZ mat , So i drew with a friends all the DBZ characters all over one side . Then when I started VS I got bored and wanted a VS mat so I drew people I liked all over the other side . THe mat looks pretty sweet . I wouldnt go get things pressed on a mat . I would say if you are a good drawer or know someone who is ask them to draw the People you like the best on a mat for you, making this kool looking mat.
BUt yea , its cheaper and more kool. BUt yea thats just my opinion
ohhhh so you are gonna have them screen on an image to a solid colored counter mat. That might work, of course size is still the biggest issue. If it works out please post a picture for us if you can.
I figured, I'll buy three mats to begin with and sample three different types....maybe a yugioh treatment, a generic JLA pic, and my stores logo design.
