I just don't understand the boost on Mysterio, wouldn't the new one just send the original to the ko'd pile. What am I missing here?

You don't "Recruit" the new Mysterio.

You only check for uniquness when you Recruit a character.

The difference is tha the 2nd mysterio isn't recruited, he's put into play directly, hence doesn't use the "recuiting" mechanism, the same way that "dual nature" and the boost of 6 drop dr light, both from dc origins, works. The uniqueness check (as already mentioned) only occurs when a character is recruited.
