I'm just looking to find out the average ATK/DEF of each of the drops all the way up to 10. It just seems to be assumed that everyone knows them and being the newbie I am, I don't. I looked around but couldn't seem to find a thread on it.
Lord-Doom's stat list is a good baseline for the drops, though there's much to be said for the shifting that begins to occur in the 6-drops (and more recently, the 5's).
1-drops now seem to be getting 3 points between ATK and DEF more often than not, unless they're privy to a powerful ability or are Army characters. Likewise, 2-drops will now tend to average 5 points, with 3/3's becoming more regular occurances, unless they have an ability which is especially applicable.
Turn 3 is the low end of a big switch in stat values, and there was a time when 3/4's and 4/3's were commonplace. Now, only the best abilities warrant a DEF of 3, and trickier or less generally useful abilities will be on 4/5's and 5/4's more often than not.
Four-drops have typically flucuated around, averaging 14 points. 8/6's and 6/8's are common, as are the 6/7's and 7/6's. In the past, anything over 7/7 was going to have a none-too-useful ability, but that's begun to change, albeit not as notably as earlier drops. If a character's ATK is under 7, its ability should be of particular power to see much play. The original Poison Ivy's a good baseline of what's just under what you want on a 6/7's text box. Conversely, 7/6's and 8/X's are better overall drops, and can get away with having less relevant powers; both 4-drop Avengers Reservists demonstrate this pretty well.
When looking at 5-drops, this is where the affiliation seems to matter a lot. Avengers teams tend to put some big hitters here, while some teams like the X-Men never make it to the 18-point baseline. Drops here tend to deviate much like the 4-drops, but with even less up-raises in ATK or DEF without a slump elsewhere. Given that this is also a turn where some of the biggest effects on characters begin to appear, and it makes some sense. I'd look for a slight up-shift for weak-texted 5-drops to 9/10 or 10/9 in future sets.
Some of the most powerful characters in the game grace the 6-drop slot, and the variance here begins to stand out more. From Dr. Light's 11/11 to the 15/13's of Kilowog and Donna Troy, you're going to want to see at least a standard 12/12 unless you've got some killer abilities. Dr. Light's a great example of what you want to see, while some others like Radioactive Man stradle the line of usefulness.
7-drops and 8-drops shift even further from the baselines by their powers. Psimon can lock out decks on his own, and suffers by being slightly above-average for a 6-drop. Conversely, there are a good number of 16/16's and other fat-statted characters with solid powers running around. Following suit, 8-drops fluctuate from the 17/17's with the awesome game-stopping powers to the 20/20 powerhouses. Beyond them, there isn't enough out there to do a real general analysis; 9-cost characters and larger rarely see play, almost regardless to the powers they're given, because games too frequently cannot be drawn out that long.
There are a few other minor considerations. Flight and range tend to count somewhat for a character's stats. Carol Danvers would likely be a 7/7 or higher if she didn't have both, while some characters and teams suffer from the lack of these; characters without range seem to be getting a slight nudge in DEF in the more recent sets. On that note, it's interesting to note how the newer sets are highlighting the breadth and reasoning for the stat differences, whereas the stat differences are a bit more sporadic in the earliest ones.
In conclusion, I'd again recommend looking at the list provided by Lord-Doom as a good baseline listing; characters with good powers and possibly flight or range should generally have stats like those, while especially useful or weak powers will explain big shifts from those.
Three quick notes:
DOR 7-drop average is skewed by the 7/7 Batman
DGL 1-drop average is skewed by the 4/4 Anti-Green Lantern
DGL 3-drop average is skewed by the 9/9 Xallarep
At most drops you can see a stat creep, especially at the low drops. At higher drops the stats are typically higher, but more flexible across stats. I am also surprised that JLA seems to have slightly lower stat lines than Green Lantern.
