So in lieu of the depressing threads that I've been posting, I forgot to mention one of the funnest (?) formats we've played.
The concept is basically pick a different pack from any set. Open them and build your deck. All affiliations are crossed over.
You can do this with as little as 2 packs or up to the normal 5 packs for Sealed. Depending on the set, I usually recommend 3 or 4 packs.
You can choose packs based on themes (Billy did a Cosmic one with MSM/MHG/MLS and threw in MKK for attack pumps) or you can choose by brand (Marvel vs. DC).
It's creates some pretty broken decks and the jank is ridiculous.
It's also an easy way to get new players to play since they don't have to worry about teaming up or team stamps (and you can introduce them to different sets at one time).
When I talk about this, I'm dumb. When you do, it's ignored even more. Sad. The 5-pack rainbow sealed is really fun. What's more fun is the 5-set draft, though. The idea is to run a draft, but with 5 packs instead of 3. Each pack is from a different set; each person having one of each of most recent sets works. For an 8-man draft, using 4 packs (Modern Age Draft) would probably scale better. Regardless, an extra trick is to stagger what set's packs are opened by each person. That way, some pieces from each set filter around through the whole thing. Allowing an automatic three team team-up seems appropriate.
The theme drafting a strong idea, and I did well in the one we did by eating up every good reservist I could find. It's so much fun, and it really forces thinking about card choices in new ways. Plus, you can get a lot of weird combos that would never see play otherwise.
How did I miss this thread? That looks like a ton of fun, and a good way for a store to get rid of all those extra packs lying around for a dollar. I have a friend who would come over with a bunch of random packs we put all the packs in a pillow case and drafted with each of us pulling a random pack each time we had to open! Lots of fun, and pretty challanging you never knew what was coming next!
Note: Cards that count affiliations, like Ethan Edwards and Lyja, Mrs.
Johnny Storm, count the number of printed affiliations instead.
So does this mean cards like Fin, intruders and Super Skrull, Kl'rt count only their printed affiliations?
We did a 4 pack Crossover draft at our hobby league and had some confusion about some cards. It was still very interesting nonetheless.
Not their printed affiliations, but the number of printed affiliations in play. Basically, treat all your own characters as automatically crossed over for their powers.
That makes sense; it's what I thought it should be. I was told otherwise and passed SuperSkrull. It's ok, I know exactly what I would play next time. :)
I watched a game of Super-cross at Chicago, This guy was able to pull off, Dynamic Duo and Team Titans Go to lay waste to his opponents board and then, Bring Goblyn Queen to the visible area KOing every stunned character.
This has become a standard every 2nd saturday at our hobby league. It's great for the store owner due to his ability to sell all the old stuff that he can't get rid of.
Plus it just tends to be so much fun and create's a new experience for us. Usually with sealded you can kinda predict what someone is playing by there affiliations. But this opens a whole new can of worms. Expect the unexpected.
