It seems to me like Spider-Man and Dr. Doom are becoming more and more compatable each set.
Spider-Man, Sensational being the best Spider-Man on turn 4 IMO
-exahusts a 3 drop by paying 7 ATK
-can exhaust a 4 drop or combination of characters up to 4
-can subsitute in for someone
-average stats at 7/7
-range
-cant be targeted Nice Try
-cant be targeted w/ Bonus w/ Trial by Jury
-w/ equipment can give character -2ATK (0 cost equip)
-Scarlet Spider stops uniqueness
-Crisis stops uniqueness
Dr. Doom, Diabolical Genius
-can return characters w/ up to 3 cost back to the hand w/ Reign of Terror
-can turn a pt face down
-controls opponents hand if you have another doom character
-below average stats at 7/6
-can exhaust 1 character
-range
-cant be trargeted w/ Expendably Ally
-Doomstadt-+3/0 or +0/3
-w/ equipment can stop activated abilities (1 cost equip)
-Crisis stops uniquness
I think Spider-Friends will be the control team in Silver-Age and not just because I am a Spider-Man fan. In Golden Age Spider-Man trumphs doom because of his superior support cards and card until we get ot turn 8 that is, but the 7 drop can take care of 8 drops aswell. Dr. Doom is still the man, but I think if I had to pick between the 2 characters no support obviously Spider-Man because Doom has to have another Doom character, w/ team and 1 support card its a toss up because Dr. doom can return to the hand combo of 3 or less(thus controlling weenies) or he can mystical paralysis other characters. Spidey on the other hand can exhaust 3 drops w/ out card support and exhaust anywhere from 4-1 characters(possibly more against Haywire :) ). But then Doom still controls pts and let you reuse a pt. In the end on turn 4 w/ 1 support card spidey effectively controls the 3 and 4 drop while Doom has to make a choice, but controls the hand....
Doom has that one abilty of stopping your opponent from playing plot twists from hand. Until Spidy gets something like that he will always come in second.
Aunt May is actually quite redic; more powerful than any of the other free recruit guys in 'fair' decks, and has some abuse potential as well. I think that there are seriously competitive Spider Friends decks for Silver and Modern. Modern will probably be mono Spider Friends, and Silver will probably be some sort of conglomeration of a few teams.
Small evasion characters and a great free recruit really make Empire State University better than Birthing Chamber (but team stamped) as a card drawer. Being able to sub into multiple copies of Sensational Spider-Man after using one is also quite silly against some off curve decks - not to mention gift wrapped.
Better than Doom? No way; I personally think Reign of Terror is the strongest card effect in the game, and they will never make another card on its power level for this game again.
"As a developer and as a Spider-Man fan, it was awesome watching this part of the set take the form that it has today. Thematically, Spider-Man is where all the action is (all the cards that refer to Spider-Man) as he changes costumes (the substitute suite of Spider-Men) and webs up various villains (all the exhaustion effects). I think Yip’s concept of a “good guy version of Doom” was executed very well here, which wouldn’t have happened without Yip’s vision, creativity, and wide array of knowledge regarding Vs. System—even if the man goes and reprints Adhesive X every once in a while."
