Fair Warning: This article may contain spoilers about the subject it reviews.
The Dragon is a massive green skinned humanoid that is super strong and an advanced healing factor. Amnesiac from the start, his first memory is waking up in a burning field in Chicago. He was duped into joining the police force and battles evil "freaks" as a member of the Chicago PD. Other freaks join, and leave the police department. Dragon is chosen to lead a team that replaces Youngblood after their departure.
This set will cover issues 1-50 give or take). The comic is well into the 200's, with numerous spin offs, so there is a lot that could be done!
What would the set look like? Maybe something like this ... Common
1 Dragon
2 Dart
3 Rapture
4 Vicious Circle Thug
5 Mace
6 SkullFace
7 Ann Stevens
8 Hardware
9 Barbaric
10 Rock
Uncommon
11 Ricochet
12 Star
13 Dung
14 Kill-Cat
15 Mighty Man
16 Smasher
17 OpenFace
18 Octopus
19 She-Dragon
Super Rare
28 Cyberface
29 Horde
30 Overlord
31 BrainApe
32 R. Richard Richards
Potential powers and Traits:
One of the common abilities in the Savage Dragon is Super Strength. You're going to see it a lot. Dragon, Barbaric, Rock, Mighty Man, Smasher... Erik Larsen sure loves brawlers! Given that, I think one or two characters should have a trait to generate more objects. Lots of Mastermind and Leadership. Ricochet's whole power base is about bouncing off things, so causing and taking Knockback are a must
Keywords:
Pretty much every villain character is going to have "Vicious Circle". It's the name of the villain group/gang. Almost a Masters of Evil meets Maggia. Police will a presence, receiving some serious muscle. Monster for Horde, Animal on BrainApe. Armor for Overlord, Dragon Slayer and Kid Avenger.
Character Spotlight
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Savage Dragon
The lead character. Super strong, Invulnerable (mostly. bullets and fire no problem, a sharp knife thrust will get him... as will repeated pounding). Found in a burning field with amnesia, he was found during the Martian Invasion (Mars Attacks! Image) to have been a cruel alien warlord. Expect the usual "bruiser" move set, though I'd expect some range for his guns, some Leadership. Maybe a trait to generate objects.
Overlord
The main anotagonist for most of the series. A Dr. Doom-esque villain who is in charge of the Vicious Circle. Standard armor power set, but would be decent up close as well, the armor allowed him to go toe to toe with Dragon. He's known for not staying dead, so a resurrection ability would be appropriate.
She-Dragon
Amy Belcher was a super freak and member of the police force. She became the star of the title for issues 51–54, during a time when The Dragon was thought deceased; the title was changed to 'Savage She-Dragon' for those issues. Probably pretty similar to Dragon's dial. She could warrant a strange Perplex for when the Eternal Youths were speaking to her from Darkworld.
Why would Wizkids even attempt this?
I can't find the link, but Erik has been asked by fans if he'd be interested. His response had been "They just need to ask". So. Wizkids, if you're reading this... GO ASK. He's crossed over with Superman and the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. The comic has had its share of characters that would be fun to see clixed. Different versions of characters could appear.

Am I correct in remembering that a villain was a regular letter-writer to The Savage Dragon, before his identity was revealed?
If you're referring to Augie de Blieck (sp?) Augie was a frequent letter writer to a number of comics. Erik worked him into a story as a thank you IIRC.

Image has had some troubles with Wizkids. They almost made some spawn stuff, but it just don’t work out.
Yeah, we touched on that when I did a Spawn article. But I'm pretty sure that was all Todd. I believe each creator can negotiate their own merch and such, so even though Todd doesn't want to, Erik or Valentino could do their own thing

It could probably be done at that scale. Between 200+ issues, costume changes, character deaths (even Dragon himself is long gone), it might be possible

This is absolutely true and is the definition of creator-owned.
I've completed collecting the IC, CT, XP, CM, Ult, MM, FF, AW, Sin, SN, AVE, M&M, SI, HoT, WoS, GSX, CA, IH, GG, AVM, CW, M10th, ASM, IM3, WK11-16, FI, WX, T:DW, CA:WS, IIM, DoFP, DP, GotG, AoUM, AoU, AVAS NFAoS, CACW, UXM, SFoes, DXF, GotG2, ADW, WI, MT T:RM, AI SW:B, EX, ABPI and X:DPAS sets.
Looking to get PR Professor X (W/X-Men) and pre-release "IC" Wolverine.
Would it be possible to get an "Image Comics" set?
Between Invincible ( which we already got a morsel of ), Walking Dead ( not a big fan, but I can't imagine it not selling ), Hack/Slash ( Give me Vlad, gimme gimme! ), Astro City, Bone ( Am I the only one who'd want this? ), Rat Queens, the Crow and all the Image properties affiliated with the old Indy clix.
I know all the individual properties would have to be negotiated, but an "Image" line would make a good addition to the Marvel/DC dominance of Heroclix.

If i'm not mistaken, while under the broad "Image" banner, they are still all creator owned, so they'd have to get the deals and it would be like the previous "Indy" set, and a mish mash.
But if you go to Kirkman, that COULD allow for quite a bit

I wonder if "Image" has anyway of collectively bargaining. Some kind of opt in opt out arrangement. Maybe not but it would make merchandising a lot easier for them.
