JEAN!: UNIQUE MODIFIER - At the beginning of your turn, you may choose a combat value. If Cyclops is adjacent to a friendly character named Jean Grey, modify the chosen combat value +1
Does the modifier fail if the two characters are no longer adjacent, or does the adjacency check only during the activation of the ability?
If I'm reading it right, they have to be adjacent at the time the value is calculated. They don't need to be adjacent to make the selection at the beginning of the turn though.
I would have thought it was the opposite. You get the modifier at the beginning of your turn, if they are adjacent. Once modified, they could move and keep the modified value. Wouldn’t it be like perplex, where once something is modified, it stays modified even if the modified piece moves outside the perplexer’s range and/or LOS?

Perplex specifies a duration for the modification (until your next turn). This effect instead specifies a condition (adjacency). It seems to me like Jean and Scott only modify each other while adjacent.
Here is the wording of Perplex for comparison:

From the PAC, p. 4:
PERPLEX FREE: Minimum range value 6. Choose a target character within range and line of fire. Modify one of that character’s combat values +1 or -1 until your next turn.

FWIW, this is correct. It's an aura effect.
-Heroclix is not a game of logic, it's a game of strategy .... after all, when's the last time that you saw a giant (using a stealth ability) that was hiding behind a swingset... and nobody could SEE him????
You technically always choose the value, even if they aren't adjacent. Only when they are adjacent does the modification happen. You would technically even choose if you have no Jean.
Non-binary. Please refer to me in "they/them" pronouns. Thank you.

It says "may," so you don't always choose. But you are right, a person could choose a value each turn even with no Jean. Would be kind of funny.
