So I've been taking stroll down memory lane (cleaning out another closet) and came across my old friend...
Was just hoping to confirm...while his air strike targets square rather than figures, I know it gets around shape change rolls, but does it bypass mastermind defense power as well?

MASTERMIND When this character would be hit by an opponent’s attack that deals damage, you may choose an adjacent friendly character that wouldn’t be hit by this attack and that is less points or shares a keyword. That friendly character instead becomes a hit target of the attack, even if it’s already a target (or would be an illegal target).
I have checked older threads, but nothing on this particular wrinkle, also haven't been keeping up the rules lawyering, so I was wondering...
Dream BIG, but keep the small dreams around just in case...
Honestly, modern rules don't even have a way to address this properly. It's technically an attack with no targets, which can't even happen.
So, ask your judge, if playing at a venue. For casual, I'd just go with MM works like normal with it.
Technically, Ross should be updated to use "becomes a target" wording like EE. As in, you pick the square, and character in/adjacent become targets. Functionally the same thing, but without the weird interactions/rules hiccups.
Thanks Lantern and Psycho for your responses. So as a follow-up, since the new rulings are so wonky and now that First Turn Immunity has the Immune clause in it. Would this attack be able to bypass it, due to the fact that it's targeting squares and not figures?

THE RULE OF FIRST TURN IMMUNITY
After the Beginning of the Game phase and until each player has finished their first turn, characters are immune unless they leave their starting area (or in rare cases, starting square[s]).
Immune is a keyphrase that says “This character can’t be moved, placed, damaged, or targeted by the effects of opposing game elements.”

You might be able to target (but per Lantern statement that should be impossible under new rules), but you's still won;t able to damage.
If any of the sentences would make more sense if the verb (or any other word) was a negative please treat it as such.

Similarly, Nemesis' Bionuclear Blast has similar wording about ranged attacks that don't target.
