Hello... the rules says that any character with super strength can pick up an object but cannot use it for combat on the same turn.
Are there any characters exempt from this rule?
Also, if your super strength character is standing on an object adjacent to an opposing character, can you pick up the object and possibly attack with it next turn? Or can you pick up an object an opposing character is standing on?
Originally posted by Kermit You can also pick up the item if you have Leap/Climb and move in at least two squares adjacent to the target. (Have to continue moving after pickup)
Dunno where you get the 2 squares thing here. It is not nessesary to move extra spaces. You can simply pick up the object as you move adjacent to the object. You do not need to continue moving after you pick it up...
Originally posted by flyby So, if you start adjacent to an opposing character and there is an item nearby, you can't just pick up the item and use it next turn?
What about Hypersonic Speed characters? Can they move, pick up, move, attack with object, then move again?
A figure with Super Strength and L/C, Phasing, HSS, or a Flying figure can pick up an object from under an enemy as they become adjacent to the enemy.
When a figure begins an action adjacent to an opposing figure on an object:
A L/C or Phasing could pick up without rolling a breakaway. But they could not attack. (L/C would be a move action, Phasing would be a power action.)
A Charge or RS figure would need to roll breakaway and if they make it, pick up the object and attack. (Charge would have to use the object, RS would not have to use the object.)
HSS option 1 would not need to roll a breakaway and could also attack with the object. (HSS option 2 cannot pick up the object.)
Everyone else needs to roll a breakaway and cannot attack.
A Charge or RS figure would need to roll breakaway and if they make it, pick up the object and attack. (Charge would have to use the object, RS would not have to use the object.)
Why would the RS characater not use the object? According to the rules, if a character makes an attack roll regardless of range or close combat, an object that is currently being carried by the attacker must be used.
Argh! I need to merge and print out all the updated rules from DC, Marvel, & Indy.

Because your base damage is more than the damage of the object (2 for a light, 3 for a heavy). Or you want to save the object to use in a close combat attack where you can do your base damage + 1 or 2 (depending on the object).

An object must be used in a close combat attack.
An object may (but does not need to) be used in a ranged attack.

From the Rules:
A character with Super Strength can throw an object at an opposing character, as shown in Figure 19.
Contrasted with:
A character that is given a close combat action, or that is making a close combat attack and that is also holding an object, must use the object in its attack, as shown in Figure 18.

Actually you just need the Indy Rulebook updated by the FAQ.
Or just the Marvel Universe Rulebook updated by the FAQ come June 2, 2004.

If running shot fig uses the object, it is a ranged attack and therefore uses the objects damage, not the base damage, FYI.
That's what I get for not reading all the way to the bottom of the thread...
Ok... see that's what I thought. From what I read, any character holding an object doesn't have any choice but to use the object when making an attack roll (regardless whether it is a ranged attack or close combat). The damage given is from the object when thrown and added at close combat.

But that's not what Heretic was saying. He was just saying that when you use an object in a ranged attack, you use the object damage (2 or 3) not the base damage.
You still have the option whether to use an object or not when doing a ranged combat attack.
(You must use it when doing a close combat attack.)

Correction: You may only throw an object when you give a Ranged Combat Action, not just a ranged combat attack.
For example, HSS(1) provides a ranged combat attack. Since you cannot give that character a Ranged Combat Action during HSS, you cannot throw an object during HSS(1).
However, RS provides a Free Ranged Combat Action, you can throw an object while performing a RS.
Ok... I think I'm left more confused. Where exactly in the rule book does it say that you have a choice whether to use a held object when making a range attack?
I thought that as long as you are carrying an object, your next attack (regardless whether it is a range or close combat), the object MUST be used and it is gone regardless whether the attack succeeds or fails.
During a close combat action (if carrying an object), the object adds to base damage (and cannot be used in combination with close combat expert - so the object must be used first before close combat expert can be used again)
During a range combat action (if carrying an object), the object must be used first and be thrown. Throwing an object cannot be used at all in any combination with the attacker's base damage or range combat expert.
There is no choice in this... you gotta lighten up your load before you can pull the trigger.
CLOSE COMBAT A character that is given a close combat action, or that is making a close combat attack and that is also holding an object, must use the object in its attack. On a successful attack, a light object increases the character’s damage dealt by 1; a heavy object increases the character’s damage dealt by 2.
RANGED COMBAT
A character with Super Strength can throw an object at an opposing character. To throw an object, give the character a ranged combat action, even if its range value is 0. A light object can be thrown 6 squares, and the target of a successful attack is dealt 2 damage. A heavy object can be thrown 4 squares, and the target of a successful attack is dealt 3 damage.
And because it will be the official rules in a few days, here is the entry from the Universe rulebook:
Quote
OBJECTS AND SUPER STREGNTH
CLOSE COMBAT A character who is given a close combat action, or who is making a close combat attack, and is also holding an object must use the object in its attack.
Note that both quotes are the same, so the why's and wherefore's are not changed with the new Universe rules.
Now, in close combat, it specifically states that you MUST use the object any time that character is given a Close Combat Action, or makes a close combat attack.
However, to throw an object, you must give that character a Ranged Combat Action. It does NOT state that you MUST use the object, and it does NOT state that you can use an object when making a ranged combat attack without giving that character a Ranged Combat Action (such as with HSS(1).
