2. Does a character (with SS) who is holding an object have to use it when making a ranged attack or can they just make a normal ranged attack?
3. The mail box and soda machine objects add 1 to the attacker's damage rating. Is this only used for close combat attacks or does it also apply to ranged attacks too?

Yes.

In short, no, you are not forced to throw an object. To throw an object, you must give that character a Ranged Combat Action, not just an attack. So, in some cases (HSS(1) for example) you cannot throw an object, since you are only given an attack, and not a Ranged Combat Action.

Both ranged and close combat attacks.
So wait, let me get this straight. If Vet Hulk picks up the Soda Machine - he gets a +1 to his damage rating. Since his range is 0 he can throw the soda machine at an opponent. The soda machine will still only do the 3 clicks of damage any heavy object does - whether it gives a boost to the damage value is irrelevant here since the damage value is replaced by the default value of damage for an object. However, if hulk uses the machine in close combat it boosts his damage from 4 to 5, plus the 2 damage for the heavy object. That's all seems clear to me.
But your answer above seems to be indicating that if Thor picks up the soda machine, that his damage value is boosted from 4 to 5 for any ranged attack, even if he isn't throwing the item? This makes no sense to me. Why would holding on to a soda machine or mail box make my thrown hammer hit harder?
If this is in fact the ruling can anyone explain to me how it makes sense...
The soda machine will do 4 damage when thrown, no matter who throws it. It's a heavy object, and has a plus-one to damage. So a heavy object does 3 when thrown. Soda machine adds one to that. Heavy object adds 2 when smacked over someone's head in close combat - soda machine adds one to that.
The soda machine and mailbox both add to the damage dealt, not the damage value. As such, you will still get the damage bonus when the object is thrown.
And you must use the object to gain it's special bonus.
That's why I come here. Learn something new every day.
So the 3-d objects don't actually add 1 to the attacker's damage rating, they are worth more damage than normal heavy objects... Thanks for clarifying.
