I am still a little unsure about this rule. So every time you hit the defenders d goes up one then at the end you add up the hits and that's the damage. I was unclear whether each hit did just one damage or if each did the characters damage.
Okay, if you're using the "stand there and hit them over and over" attack here's how it works.
Nightcrawler (10 attack) starts adjacent to exp Avalanche (15 defense). His first attack needs a 5 or better to hit. If he succeeds, then he rolls to hit again, this time against a 16 defense, then a 17 and finally an 18. Because of the Rule of Three this is where the raise in defense stops. Once he finally misses his opponent will be dealt one click of damage for each successful attack. At this point the opponent rolls for Impervious or Super Senses.
So say Nightcrawler rolled an 8, a 7, a 10 and another 7. His first three rolls successfully hit (7+10=17, and Avalanche's effective Defense is an 18 for the last roll), so Avalanche takes 3 damage.
A Hypersonic characters damage value only comes into play on a "hit and run" attack.

No, you can theoretically do an infinite amount of damage.
Looking at my example for you above, if Nightcrawler rolled an 11 over and over and over he could take Avalanche out in one turn. In fact, with the miraculous repeating 11's, Nightcrawler could take out a full health 300 point Sentinal in one turn.
The damage does not ignore defensive abilities, so you need at least 2 successful attacks to hurt someone with toughness, and at least 3 successful attacks to hurt someone with Invulnerability or Impervious.
ok i'm almost clear on this the defense can only raise by three so lets say a 15 to an 18. I can still keep attacking till i miss though right. For instance nightcrawler hits Avalanche 3 times so avalanches defense is 18. I can still atack until i miss but his defense doesn't get any higher. So in theory i could hit him 6 times and deal 6 damage. (modified by defensive powers of course)
