Spring Regionals Battle Report

Battle Report.
Here is how my regional went. After much play-testing and thought I decided to go with a Black Adam team. He is #1 for many reasons, but the reason I like the best is he is not adversely affected by most Battlefield Conditions. Big range figs (like Thor) are really hurt by darkness AND deep shadows. All of a sudden you’re paying a lot of points for a 6 range instead of a 10 range. So here is my final team:
Black Adam +ICWO 160
V Deathstroke + ICWO 68
R Johnny Alpha 41
R Destiny 20
E Paramedic 10
Deep Shadows
Darkness
Poor Teamwork
Ordinary Day
Round 1: I had to face my good friend Conan in my first match. He puts together great unconventional teams. He used:
V Nebula +Trick Shot + ICWO
Little Sure Shot
Clarice Ferguson
V Jinx + ICWO
E Abby Chase
Paramedic (V?)
Alfred
+3 more bystanders
The idea of his team was to use the pogs as mastermind fodder for Nebula and blocking terrain that she could shoot over with trick shot. Very Clever. I saw two 10-range figures on his team so I played Darkness. He played placeholder. With his range somewhat under control it became a real positioning match right away. I went for Abby first, I hate her. But luck was on my side and she was gone with one hit from BA. Next I took down Jinx while Deathstroke tried to maneuver around the pogs to outwit mastermind. He got hit pretty bad from Nebula and was on the retreat for the rest of the match. My third attack was on Clarice. Once Conan’s TK was gone it was difficult for him to position himself to make any real attacks. He continued to try to set up a shot to take out Deathstroke, but time was called before he got the chance. The random lesson here was Fortitude should go on mastermind characters. That is the future. This was a great team. It was really the darkness that killed it.
Round 2: I played a really nice guy from the New Hampshire area. He also had a Black Adam team, but with no TK. I won map so I chose the Indoor 3-d object map “The House”. Black Adam loves this map. I thought it would be fun. He used:
V Black Adam
V Abby Chase
V Scourge
V Natalia Kassle +Stunning Blow
V Paramedic
I think that’s it. Danger girl + Super Senses + Stealth grrrr. I played placeholder, while he played Darkness. Black Adam and Johnny hung back outside the house while Deathstroke and Destiny moved up. Deathstroke makes a pretty good bait piece since he has the late leap climb and is a “good fig”, my only other attacker (wait `til you here about Johnny!). The attack came slow as my opponent moved up his Dangergirl pieces and Scourge to assist Black Adam. Eventually He came to attack Deathstroke but missed (ICWO defense up to 18). It was at this point an odd ruling was made which complicated the event: Fliers that start their movement on hindering terrain can only move half their movement. This was strange to me, but not wanting to argue the top judges in New England, I went with it. I was able to outwit and hit his Black Adam for 6, then pushed to finish him off. The Danger Girls hit Deathstroke pretty bad and killed destiny, My only fear at this point was Abby Chase’s uncanny ability to stay alive, and her outwit. I went after her and ko’d her in one hit. The dice were really working in my favor this game. Now that he had lost the ability to damage Black Adam, I just cleaned up the rest. My final move was Johnny Alpha declaring 2000AD on the paramedic and KO’ing her with his strontium dog resolve. All in all, if the dice had gone differently…I would have been in trouble.
Round 3: This was my match against Entropy and his KC Flash Team. He chose the gas station (my favorite map) and it made for a really fun and interesting game as both HSS characters raced all over the board in a classic match-up. He used:
KC Flash +ICWO
Clarice Ferguson + ICWO
Oracle (on card)
R Paramedic
E? Domino
I feel like I’m missing someone. We both played Poor Teamwork. I used 3-d objects like the Computer and the desk that add to attack. Entropy played a real interesting game using the sides of the board a lot to sneak around my Deathstroke. My initial attack on Flash failed when Entropy pushed when I was sure he wouldn’t (pushed flash off outwit). After that he retaliated on Black Adam hitting him for four and off of HSS. Destiny Died AGAIN. I pushed BA back to the medic to get some healing, but only for one. If Flash pushed at this point to kill my medic, I think I would have lost. But my medic got to heal BA some more, but after another hit from Flash, BA wasn’t good enough to hit that high defense. Deathstroke and BA did manage to hurt Clarice enough that she retreated, and I also killed off Domino while I waited for an opportunity to get Flash. Eventually I got BA healed all the way up and ran him across the whole board to hit Flash for which was enough to turn the tide of battle. Entropy missed his crucial heal roll, and then it was just cleanup. Once again, Johnny declaring 200AD on the paramedic and ko’ing her was my final move. Johnny HATES medics.
Round 4 (finals): By some twist of fate I didn’t have to face the undefeated Amazo team (low point totals I guess) or my friend’s Identical Black Adam team (he lost to Amazo). My final opponent was very secretive about his team and when it was revealed I was shocked he did as well as he did. He used:
V Superwoman +ICWO
V Nightwing +ICWO?
R Jean Gray
V Scourge
V Paramedic
BT Lois Lane
I played ordinary day. The battle was on the metropolis outdoor map. My opponent went first and randomly moved Nightwing out about 6 spaces. I thought that this was bait since Nightwing could just LC back to the medic, but I took the bait anyway and TK+ HSS out there, hit for 6 and retreated. He then returned the favor with Superwoman on my Black Adam, but in an amazing dice roll I made impervious to avoid 7 clicks of damage. After that, Deathstroke moved to outwit her impervious, BA pushed to do 5 on his way over to the medic, next turn superwoman started her trek back to her medic. To make a long story short, I Ko’ed Superwoman and Nightwing, which gave Black Adam run of the board, and I went on to win.
Final thoughts:
Loki isn’t really that different from his original paint job (most difference is in the face).
Driving to Pa almost killed my car last year. I hope it fairs better this year.
I was REALLY lucky. I went out and bought a lottery ticket as soon as I left the regionals
MANY teams could have taken down my team. I’m sure one Tandy Bowen and some lucky dice rolls would do it just fine.
See ‘yall in Phili! Morimotos!!!
