Question on Light and Heavy Objects

Hi there-
"Older equipment have the subtext of light or heavy objects.
With the new terrain rules, and new equipment cards, can non-super strength characters be assigned old equipment that was originally a heavy object?
Or do we still assume those old equipment were meant only for certain characters?
Someone please help, as I cannot find this answer no matter how or where I search."
