When trying to equip an object on the first turn, I am aware that a character with 8 movement and sidestep can grab an object and bring it to another character in the starting zone. Can a character with 7 movement and sidestep do this? Ie can a character grab an object in adjacent squares?

Thank you!

Rulebook, page 25:

Object Pick Up Once per move, this character may either pick up one light object (holding it) or put down one held object, in a square it moves through or is adjacent to.
Visible Dials and Pushing Damage need to be optional. This is the way.
Assuming the character is single-based, it requires a minimum of 5 movement plus sidestep (and Super Strength if it's a Heavy object, of course). It needs to move 4 squares forward, passing adjacent to the item in the 5th square and picking it up, then 1 back towards the starting zone. Sidestep brings it back adjacent to a character still in the starting zone where it can drop the item in the other character's square.
Special objects must be placed at least 5 squares away from any starting area. If the character moves 5 squares, they can at best drop the held object 3 squares away.
The character equiping it needs Sidestep as well to grab it.
You can't pick up and drop an object in the same movement. So the character going out to get it needs Sidestep either way if you are trying to equip to someone else on turn one.
You can also choose a character with hss and break your action down into 2 movements
You could take any random player from the game and listen to their complaints. You could change everything to be exactly how they asked. At the end of the day they'd spend an hour complaining about pandering while pissed off that they have nothing left to complain about.
Play him at that point level, and generate the Walking Woods one square out of their starting area. 4 speed with Sidestep will get the job done in that case. Good keywords with Monster and Cosmic being the best ones.

Can you check for adjacency while moving? or are those requirements separate? because it could be read that you either are adjacent to a square OR you move through a square...not necessarily a square adjacent to a square you move through.

You can definitely check for adjacency during movement. If you couldn’t, opponents couldn’t stop a moving character who moves adjacent.
And yes, the rule means any square you move adjacent to, since the entire object interaction happens in the middle of the move (unlike something like Carry, which plays out after movement ends)
