Here is a link to some coverage of a recent podcast interview with Alex Ross. He is disappointed at not receiving any sort of compensation for elements of his design work being used in certain live-action properties.
I'm adding this to the conversation because its another piece of information that makes me believe that WB/DC was probably putting a higher price (*1) on licensing sculpts, images and character names to outfits like WizKids. Creators (at least those who weren't being sexually harassed by fellow employees) were always very quick to say how they felt that Dan Didio was being very generous to see that creators were being reimbursed for there creations. (*2)
(*1) It is impossible to know if WB/DC was requiring larger license fees to reimburse creators, or if reimbursement was coming out of standard licensing fees. It should be self-evident that time spent trying to figure out who, if anyone, should be reimbursed as part of a licensing fee would add both delay and expense (the cost of someone doing that work).
(*2) The work-for-hire model has victims, and "old" WB certainly has been cruel to certain creators. Even so, I feel that a case can be made that some higher-ups at WB/DC Comics may have been motivated to advocate such deals through self-interest more as opposed to looking out for other creators.
Either you or a comment from one of your links mentioned how Levitz (vital to LoSH) helped Jack Kirby out by "re-designing" his 4th world characters to get around some contract language to give him future compensation because the company felt they were right to uphold the original work for hire signed.
If extra $ needs to go to the creators I'm fine with that, even if DC sets have to cost extra on top of what Marvel does because of it...I'd feel fine. Obviously people will be price sensitive as the price increases so bring out the good historical stuff.

Theoretically they seem to be building to a Great Darkness rehash (at a very slow pace). I think there should be some restraint or caution exercised about jumping on a current fad compared to historical ones...that's probably how we got Glorith the Legion hero (23 issues in unfortunately a forgettable run cut short) instead of Glorith the Legion Super Villain (30 issues with a MAJOR role in 5YL).
