"Da Brood"... or "Is it getting a little Swarm in here?"
Many times in the life of the game, I've tried to make The Brood work as a force. X-men: Rise & Fall has given us new Brood, so I want to revisit them, but I'm still not sold on them as a fighting force.
The Brood have one big advantage in 2021 rules, as fliers can now carry fliers.
The new Brood Queen is IMO a step up from past Queens, in that she can generate new Brood at will, and that they are (for better or worse) on click #1. I'm simply not sold on her threat potential otherwise.
Her Brood are not bad at all for 15 points, but without being able to push off of the first click, I don't know how threatening a pair of them will be... I'm already assuming one will be carrying the other.
Lil' Broo seems like a no-brainer, because the Outwit will surely be necessary for the (at least) one thing on an opposing team that is sure to cause the Brood fits.
The past Brood were always somewhat outclassed (for the points, for their mechanics), with the only figure that looks half-way viable is the prime Professor X. I think I'd risk the full-dial for the possibility of (2021 rules) in close combat (with Empower!). His Perplex is a wash (dumb), but he could always try an ID card trick. Weird that he doesn't have the Monster keyword.
Is there a viable all-Brood team? Or are Da Brood condemned to simply be more options for Monster keyword teams? The F4 LE Moleman can help them move... which may be worthwhile if playing a team of nothing else but XMFR Brood.
Basically you have 3 Queens rolling leadership to get the Broods out as well as power actioning them every turn. Molemans/Prez Rickards leaderships and Queens cosmic energy will hopefully have them doing this nearly every turn. Molemans FREE: Move 1 is critical for them to get around. You can carry as you move so its like giving them all side step. If you are lucky enough to get map roll chose an underground maze/labyrinth map to really torture your opponent.
Thats my take on it anyway. I guess you could use Broo and ProfessorX instead but this way just seems so much stronger and you REALLY need Mole Man. I'd actually like to try this but i dont want to invest in 30 drones.
If anyone wants to try this please let me know how it goes.
I was thinking something similar with the Leadership guys. I have more Brood than any other XMRF generic (not quite 30, but pretty close to 20... it is quite absurd) but only one Queen.
With the previous generation of Brood (UXM?) I also found myself using multiple Queens, but the egg mechanic is somewhat disappointing, since the egg can be KOed and then no more Brood!
Its an obscene amount of drones you can create with 3 queens, leadership, willpower and power actions.
The problem though is your opponent is likely just going to sit back and nuke your drones over and over again racking up tons of points while you do nothing but generate.
Another variation would be to build it with just two queens and start with 6 more drones in play. This gives you a much better shot at getting map choice where a map with tons of hindering terrain to utilize stealth can be far more useful. Not only are you generating insane amounts of drones, now they wont be able to be range attacked.
There is definitely more fun here the more queens you have though.
