Sorry if this is dumb. This is my first time asking a question here so I hope I'm doing it right. Hopefully it isn't too dumb a question.
My question is about xmxs s007 Colony
So let's say I hit a character that shares a keyword. My character has a 3 printed damage value. I roll the d6 for bcf and get a 1. I'm confused about the order of effects. Bcf says "minimum result is this character's printed damage value -1". Is that referring to the roll or to the damage dealt? Cause colony would increase the damage dealt by 1. So is that 1 considered in the calculation for minimum result or is it added after? Like, would I deal 3 damage or 2 damage?
Like I said, sorry if this is dumb or I'm missing something obvious. I can't figure out the answer myself. Thanks for the help.
I believe this would fall under the rule of 'replace than modify'.
Replace then modify applies to combat values.
Damage Dealt is not a combat value
BLADES/CLAWS/FANGS When this character makes a close attack against a
single target and hits, you may roll a d6. If you do, deal damage equal to the result instead of normal damage. Minimum result is this character’s printed damage value -1.
"3.1 The Rule of Replace Then Modify
Whenever a combat value needs to be calculated, follow these steps in the order listed:
* Start with the printed value.
* Apply all replacement values that set the value to a specific number (i.e. – it becomes 6).
* Apply any replacements that multiply or divide that value (usually halving or doubling).
* Apply the sum of all modifiers (+ and -)
If there are multiple replacements of the same type, the active player decides the order. If theresult of calculating any value (combat or otherwise) is less than zero, use zero instead." (Page 31)
"1.5 Combat Values
A character has five combat values. Four of them appear on the combat dial through the window next to a combat symbol of the same type. They are speed, attack, defense, and damage. These values may change as click your character’s combat dial. The fifth combat value is range and it doesn’t change via clicking. It is printed on the character’s base next to one or more symbols." (page 2)
"12.4a Damage Dealt
After assigning damage to each hit target, apply any effects that increase or decrease the assigned damage. The result is the damage dealt. The minimum damage that can be dealt
to a character is 0. Effects that refer to the “damage dealt by the attack” or the “attack damage” find this value and not any other damage that may happen during an attack." (Page 27)
I refer you (collective you) to this post by Gensan as to how modifiers to Damage Dealt are applied. (it includes proper citations)
In short, after determining Damage Delt (in this case replacing it with the dice roll result) modifiers are applied to make the final Damage Delt = Dice Result + 1)
while the result is the same, "Replace then modify" is not applied in this case (since as mentioned Damage Delt si not a Combat Value).
If any of the sentences would make more sense if the verb (or any other word) was a negative please treat it as such.
Gotta jump in and correct you here, Coyote's Own. "Replace, then modify" actually applies to other values too:

Examples of these values are damage dealt, damage taken, or the result of a die roll.
The Rule of Three doesn't apply to other values, but "replace, then modify" does as other values are calculated "the exact same way as combat values".
But what we really need to look at here is the rule of Minimums and Maximums:

In both cases, all replacements, modifiers, and increases/decreases continue to apply, and only the final result of the calculation is changed.
So you have to calculate the whole value first. Let's look at B/C/F real quick:

So the minimum in B/C/F is referring to the result of the d6 roll. This is calculated before Damage Dealt is determined, so the order would indeed be:
1. Roll a 1 on the d6.
2. The result is calculated, which is 1.
3. The minimum is applied to the result, changing it to 2.
4. Damage Dealt is calculated using this result.
5. The Damage Dealt is increased by 1, changing it now to 3.
So tyroclix has this right. The final damage dealt value would be 3 in the scenario presented by FlashSpidey.
Unrelated, but very important:
Also, I want to address this real quick:

I want to appeal to everyone reading this, everyone that browses the Rules Questions forum, that there are no stupid questions.
We want you to enjoy this game without the confusion, without unanswered questions, and without having to argue with anyone about how something should work. Everyone that regularly, or irregularly, answers questions genuinely wants you to have the most fun you can have, even if it means answering the simplest questions like "How do I move my character?" or the most complicated like "What happens when I Charge within 3 squares of Agatha Harkness?"
There is no such thing as a dumb, or stupid, or silly question. We're here to help, and you're not bothering us by asking. We would rather you ask here than go on confused, hurting your ability to have fun. If we didn't want to answer rules questions, we wouldn't be here!
We do the heavy lifting so that you can just enjoy the game. That's why we are here.

Like Coyote’s Own said, I wish I could give you even more positive reputation for this but I need to spread it around first.
