His work brought me a lot of joy over the decades. I was always most impressed how the books he worked on always felt like they were moving forward, advancing the greater universes of the comic companies. There are a number of "creative geniuses" at both DC and Marvel that I feel ultimately contributed much less... or let me write "contributed something great and then stagnated".
I can't immediately think of another comic creator who was able to use such a wide spectrum of emotions to tell so many enjoyable stories. Maybe Alan Moore, but with Moore I can't think of any his individual titles that combined different emotional beats within a single title in the way that Giffen was able to... I feel that with Giffen I could always trust that there would be moments of joy... and maybe even a "happy ending"... whereas even with Moore's books I'd be lucky if the work ended with melancholy. Obviously "fun" books like Tom Strong or his Supreme were channeling a different tone, but it isn't like either of those varied far from their tone.
