I started this game (used to play VS.), and got interested because of the comic books characters. I got a DC Hypertime Starter, and a DC Legacy Booster. I was wondering with these, what I should do? Get more boosters (which kind?)? Another starter? Look for certain characters? What strategy should I use with these characters? Here are the characters I got:
Starter:
Nightwing (Veteran)
Swamp Thing (Veteran)
Intergang Agent (Experienced)
Mad Hatter (Rookie)
Solomon Grundy (Rookie)
Blue Beetle (Rookie)
Plastic Man (Rookie)
Clayface III (Rookie)
Booster (Legacy):
Captain Atom (Veteran)
Superwoman (Veteran)
Hourman (Experienced)
Hourman (Experienced)
Deep Shadows Card (What are these cards?)
Just wondering if these were good or not? Just need some help, and thanks for looking.
First of all, head over to www.heroclix.com and read up on the latest rules and PAC (Powers and Abilities card), I believe the Marvel Universe set is the latest version of the official rules. This will help you to get a feel for the game and for what kind of strategies you may want to use with these figs. Also browse this Strategy/Tactics section so you can see some examples of what kind of strategies other people use.
You've got some decent figs there (especially V Nightwing and V Captain Atom). Tournaments can be intimidating if you're a newbie, so if you have a friend who is also into this game (or who you think can be easily brought into the game) play a few rounds.
Then if you like the game, I would suggest buying at least a few more boosters as they would give you some more team building options. Try ebay for boosters in bulk, it can be a good bit cheaper than buying in a store. I think you should only buy more starters if you feel the need for more/different maps. I hope I answered some of your questions.
Go out and buy the Marvel Universe Starter. It has 6 figures that you can't get anywhere else. They are all affordable pieces and then you also get the Universe Rule Book. From that set, hold on to
Exp WASP
EXP Spiderman
Exp Sabertooth
Exp Wolverine
The Exp Electra is OK (no comparison to the Electra from Criticla Mass)
The Exp Hobgoblin is the only weak piece in the set.
But the set breaks down to 2, 100 pt teams that will help you understand team-building strategies.
For old pieces you may want, Ebay is not a bad place to pick up some REV sets (Rookie, Exp, Vet). Deal with sellers that will sell you multiple sets for a reduced shipping/combined shipping rate. You can usually find basic REV for anywhere from .99 to 2.99. Don't just search the auctions...follow a link to a store and see what they have.
Also, you may try trading here on HCrealms. You can always trade other stuff you have... PS2 games, trading card games, .. whatever someone else may want for some good basic figs.
Depending on where you live, there are stores that sell lose figures. Unless you are married to a certain piece DO NOT buy from places that have single REVs from 4-8 dollars. For the most part, these places overprice their figs greatly. Your best bet would be dollar bins at these stores. Also, I have found that collectible stores that offer more then just comics and heroclix have better deals on lose figures. General gaming stores and sports stores often don't try to milk as much out of a single fig (in my opinion). I think that is because they don't track the popularity as much of a certain fig and prices seem fair.
Also, be a nice person and talk to the other gamers you meet. You'd be surprised to find out the number of extra figs we have lying around the house. But we don't know what you need unless you ask. I might not carry all my extras around, but I carry am inventory sheet so I always know what I have and what I can give away (I've just been lazy and haven't posted on the trade page here yet).
