Last night my wife (Yeah.......she actually LOVES the game!!!!) and I sat down together and had a 1000 point theme game. She was representing the Uncanny X-Men (Including Unique Night Crawler, Phoenix and Longshot...etc!!) while I was playing Unique Ares, Shazam!, Count Nefaria, Dormammu and Nightmare.
Just magine the possibilities........!!!
Yeah, it was her 18 figures against my 5,....... but I was feeling confident that my all Unique Super-Maniac Heavey Hitter team would destroy her wimpy mutants!!! Needless to say, the game started pretty interesting and intense. I got first turn took out V Shadowcat and nailed various other muties right off the bat. As time flew by it was getting late, so we paused the game and will resume tonight (I've lost Shazam! (don't ask) and she's only down 3 figs!!!!!......).
All this unecessary backstory leads into my question. Please read through the following scenario and let me know your feedback:
I HAD TAUNT ON ARES. WHEN MY WIFE MIND CONTROLED HIM WITH PROFESSOR X (BY UPPING THE PROF'S ATTACK VALUE BY +2 THROUGH V BEAST AND V GAMBIT'S PERPLEX. SHE TOOK THE 2 CLICK DAMAGE AS ARES IS OVER 200 POINTS, AND THEN SHE HEALED HERSELF BY USING THE X-MEN TEAM ABILITY WITH WOLVERINE AND COLOSUS....ALSO ACTIVATING COLOSUS IN THE PROCESS!!......... ARGH, I FEEL A MIGRANE COMING ON!!!)
ANYWAY, BACK TO THE MATTER AT HAND. SHE CONTROLLED ARES TO TAUNT ONE OF MY OWN CHARACTERS, COUNT NEFARIA TO BE EXACT. (WHICH MEANS THAT ON MY TURN I HAVE TO USE THAT CHARACTER TO COUNTER-ATTACK ARES RIGHT.....?). BUT, ON MY TURN I USED NIGHTMARE WITH THE STUNNING BLOW CARD (= DREAMTEAM) TO INCAPACITATE PROFESOR X.
SO DOES THAT MEAN THAT........
a) ARES IS NO LONGER MIND CONTROLLED?
b) THE TAUNT IS NO LONGER IN EFFECT AS ARES AND COUNT NEFARIA ARE NO LONGER OPPOSING CHARACTERS?
A little clarification on this (and the implications thereof........!!) would be really appreciated. As a 20 year comic collecter I really love this game and have a riot EVERY time I play. While I'm at it, 2 other minor questions:
1) IF I ROLLED DOUBLE ONES WITH TAUNT DOES THAT MEAN THAT I MUST ATTACK MYSELF NEXT TURN??? THE CARD STATES THAT THE TARGET (myself) MUST MOVE ADJACENT TO OR ATTACK THE TARGETED CHARACTER (also myself) NEXT TURN.
(Of course my wife insists this is the case.........!!!)
2) IF I PUT DAMAGE SHEILD ON A FIGURE WITH THE MYSTIC TEAM ABILITY, WOULD THE ATTACKER THEN BE DEALT 2 DAMAGE??
Thanks for any help.
P.S. I have Dormammu in hindering terrain and have been mindblastin the #### out of the X-Men since round one!!!!!!!!!!!! HAHAHHAHAHHAHHHAHA I LOVE IT!!
#1 I'm pretty sure the effects of a Mind Control action end as soon as your opponents turn. For example, they MC Ares and turn off his impervious, it goes back on as soon as their turn is over.
#2 Double-ones does not require you to attack yourself, you just take 1 damage.

#3 Yes, a character making a close-ranged attack on a character with Mystics and Damage Shield can take 2 clicks of damage for damaging that figure. The question is whether or not the opposing figure has damage reducers, since Mystics goes through all damaged reducers and Damage Shield is still subject to them.

On the taunt question, I would have to imagine the taunted Count Nefaria would just have to move next to Ares during your turn. Under no circumstances (well, outside of support) can you attack one of your own characters, and Taunt gives you the option of either moving next to the taunter or attacking.
What happens to Prof X afterward doesn't have an effect on anything, AFAIK.

Well, you can't target friendly figures. So that means the Count cannont attack Ares on your turn, no matter what. It's actually fairly pointless to mind control and use taunt. By the same reasoning, rolling a crit miss does not result in an attack against one's self (can't attack friendly figures). It does result in taking one unavoidable damage from the crit miss as per the critical miss rules.
Also, from the sounds of it, it seems you're asking if attacking Professor X would undo the mind control on Ares. The fact is, Ares is already no longer under the effects of mind control. A mind control attack is made; if successful you get to make an action with the mind controlled figure; after the action the figure returns to its original controller and is no longer mind controlled. So as you can see, attacking Prof X on the next turn has nothing to do with mind control.
Lastly, a figure with Damage Shield and the Mystic TA will give 2 damage to an attacker if the attack against it was close combat, as Damage Shield only retaliates against close combat attacks. Mystic damage is applied ranged or close.

Because the timing wasn't quite clearly laid out...I assume Ares completed his MC assigned action before Professor X took his 2 clicks of damage for the MC and then that healing with the characters happened. Just wanted to make sure that was clear since once Ares was MCed he needed to complete the MC assigned action before anything else could happen. (Not that it makes a major difference in the scenario laid out here, but....)

Well you still got to control one of your opponent's actions the next turn. Your forced the Count to take an action to attempt to move adjacent to Ares.

Like Buddyhoss said, after a MCed character completes the MC assigned action it returns to its owners control. That said...any powers or TAs which were canceled while the character was MCed will continue to remain canceled until the end of the current turn.
And remember...canceling a power is not an action so Ares would still need to be assigned an action while MCed.

Like Buddyhoss said, Damage Shield only activates from a successful close combat attack. And remember that with MC (the theme of this thread)...Mystics only activates when the Mystic takes damage from an attack. Since MC deals no damage...it won't activate Mystics.
As for order, Mystics damage is dealt first and then Damage Shield. This is important since you are not actually dealing 2 clicks of damage. You deal 1 click from Mystics and then 1 click from Damage Shield. The Mystics click cannot be reduced. The Damage Shield click can be reduced. So if a character with Invulnerability takes a Mystics click and then still has Invulnerabilty or even just Toughness...it will reduce the Damage Shield click and take 0 from the Damage Shield.
If you roll a critical miss with Taunt, the attacker does not take any damage as Taunt is a "no damage" attack. Also, a critical hit will not cause damage to the target for the same reason.
