Cap leaned against a support pillar trying to catch his breath, his enhanced heart pounding furiously in his chest. He stood near a small mound of Atlantan bio-engineered shock troops, his chainmail shreded and a nasty claw mark on his arm.
The rest of the Avengers were down and hurt, Thor was still standing, as usual, but even he had cuts and bruises. There was the sound of debris crunching under feet and he and Thor both spun to confront the source.

"AAGGHHH!" screamed a pimply young National Guard soldier, dropping his rifle with fright.

Several more National Guard troops filed in, laughing at the now embarrassed soldier. The guard commander, a grizzled looking Colonel entered and exchanged salutes with Cap.

The older man eyed Cap and whistled, "Good to see you getting in on the war son, but couldn't you have left some for us?"

Cap laughed and relaxed some. "Sorry sir, we tried to string them along but they just went down to fast. Still, that just means we have time to take some more down."

"That's a negative soldier. Word's just in, the Atlanteans have staged a coup, they're calling for a truce and withdrawing all troops from US territory. It seems the people were just going along with their nut of a King, one of his Generals had the good sense to kick him out and take command. War's over son," beamed the Colonel.

Cap nodded but muttered, "just following orders eh? Where have I heard that before?"

After reviving the other Avengers, and making sure that the troops had the Atlanteans firmly in custody, Cap gave the Colonel a final salute and went home. He was looking forward to some peace and quiet.
