I think it was, in a way, like the new description of LoS from rooftops in that the wording changed around it to make it sound possible, but it was never directly addressed. Not a big thing, I suppose, but for figs with little difference in XP levels it's quite an advantage.
It had been a tough fight but in the end X-Factor was victorious. Doom lay humbled and battered, and his machines were smashed.
“Times like this I wish I smoked,” observed Quicksilver
Polaris laughed, “Not for you, shortens your wind don’t you know.” Using her magnetic powers she fashioned some holding cuffs from scrap metal and fastened them over Doom’s gauntlets.
“Big bad Doctor Doom, he does not seem so much now does he?” smirked Pietro.
“Neither do you stripling!” boomed a voice of authority.
X-Factor whirled to see another Doom settle to the ground.
The new Doom eyed Pietro dangerously. “You should watch your tongue child, I would not take such insolence from your father, and he is twice the man you are.”
To his credit Pietro did not back down, for in truth his father’s hot blood pumped in his veins. “My father is an insane megalomaniac, something I am sure you are familiar with being one yourself.”
“But at least he knows how to pick a side and stick with it,” replied Doom, “That seems to be something that was not passed on to his next of kin.”
A red dot appeared on Doom’s head and Domino came on over the com link, “Enough foreplay, want me to light him up leader man?”
Doom smirked, “Please, do not insult me with your toys.”
There was a whining sound as Bishop powered-up his plasma rifle, “How about something a little more 21st century Doctor?”
Havok intervened, “Who are you and what do you want with Doom?”
The new Doom laughed coldly, “You’re obviously not very smart mutant, he is the pretender, I am the real Doom. I have come to take him back to Latveria for punishment.”
“And we’re supposed to believe this why?” asked Havok.
“Doom would not have fallen to your band of genetic misfits,” stated the new Doom mater of factly.
“There’s an easy way to test that theory pal,” countered Havok, plasma beginning to form around his fists.
The two men locked eyes, neither looking away. “Better men than you hae tried, and yet Doom endures” replied Doom icily.
Doom waved a hand over his left gauntlet and two small orbs began to hover, one red, one blue. The red orb began to hum and emitted a bright light that washed over the room and then falling back into Dooms waiting hand.
Polaris, who had been hovering just off the ground found herself dropping. Alex’s plasma just dissipated into thin air.
Bishop had seen the like before, that’s why he came with more than just his mutant gifts. He leveled his rifle at Doom.
With a wave of his other hand Doom activated the second orb which emitted a blue light over most of the room but stopping just short of reaching Blink. Having released it’s light the second orb also fell into Doom’s waiting hand.
Bishops rifle grew quiet, Domino’s sight went dead. As Doom started to walk over to the imposter it was obvious that he was not walking with the same ease that he had as he had when he walked into the room.
“Nice trick,” came the reply from a very agitated Alex, “But if you think a little light show is going to stop us you’re going to be in for a rude awakening.”
With a few words that were barely audible Doom’s hands started to crackle with energy and he started to hover off the ground, “What an appropriate choice of words Mr. Summers, awakening.”
“Whoa whoa whoa!” shouted Blink, pushing her way between the two men. “Let me see if I can fight my way through the cloud of testosterone here…This new Doom may be telling the truth Alex, the Talus is telling me we’re not done here yet.”
Alex looked over to Lorna, who nodded.
“I’ll be watching you Doom, keep your nose clean,” said Havok matter of factly.
“Know this, the only reason you and your team are still breathing today is because it pleases Doom to allow it to be so, you should feel most appreciative.” replied the monarch of Latveria with a sneer.
As Doom started to head out with the imposter in tow he turned around, “That will not always be the case, it would be for your benefit to keep your meddling to things you can handle in the future.”
With that Doom flew off with his prisoner in tow.
--------------------------------------
The Quinjet had barely touched down when Val met them at the ramp.
“What’s up Val?” asked Lorna with concern.
“You said to let you know right away if there was any more news about those comets. Well they came down off the coast of Seattle an hour ago, retrieval teams…”Val didn’t even get to finish her sentence, Alex was already running towards the med section.
Domino walked up to Val, “So what happened?”
Val started to walk after Alex while explaining, “Well it seems that Rachel’s disappearance coincided with another mutant’s disappearance, a Mrs. Jean Grey. Who at the time of her disappearance was with the X-men. Reports say that both of these two women were experiencing power fluctuations and out of character behavior in the case of Mrs. Grey.”
Lorna was the first to speak, “So what ever it was effected both of them?”
Val nodded, “That what it looks like. The only issue is that we don’t know what ‘it’ is.” Val stopped walking to look at Lorna, “And that’s one of our major concerns.” Val stated walking again.
Ororo noticed that Bishop was being even more quiet that usual, but she just guessed he was still a bit put off but their run in with Lord Doom from earlier. But she was very curious in what val had just told them, “What do you mean one of the major concerns?”
As they made it to the door of the med lab, Alex walked out and leaned heavily on the door facing his team.
Lorna walked up and wrapped her arm around her husbands looking right into his eyes, “She doesn’t remember.”
Lorna was confused, “Doesn’t remember what?”
“What happened, where she was for all this time……………..the last thing she remembers is fighting the suits of armor(*-DM),” came a very saddened response from Alex.
“Really?” said Val, “When we first brought her in she couldn’t even remember that. All she kept talking about was some sprite……………but she never even drinks pop. Maybe this means the amnesia is only temporary.”
Lorna hugged Alex, “She’ll be fine, it could have been worse.”
“You have no idea how right you are, Lorna.” said Val with out a hint of mirth in her voice, “Follow me.”
The rest of X-Factor didn’t like the sound of that. They followed Val down the hall to a room with armed guards posed at the entrance. One of the guard raised his rifle as the other stepped to blck their path, “I’m sorry Ms Cooper but until the specialist from Muir Island can give her a clean bill of health she’s under level 6 quarantine.” came the guards reply in steady tone. “Orders, are orders mama.”
Pietro crossed his arms, “Level 6 quarantine? I thought there were only 5 levels.”
Val shook her head, “Level 5 quarantine is restricted access with only complete environment isolation suits and 3 years of experience with our bio-hazard team. Level 6 means no one goes in except the expert........and they don’t come out for one full week of their own quarantine.”
“Can we at least show the team through the window?”
The guard held up his hand as he triggered his calm with the other, “Copy.”
As he walked over to the window he nodded to Val, “Visual is approved, please don’t touch the glass.”
Ororo was intrigued, “More safety protocol?”
“No,” said the guard with a quick smirk that disappeared as soon as it appeared, “I’m just in charge of the glass and I hate streaks, mama.”
The guard triggered a code in the control panel and the curtain in the room automatically rolled back revealing a red haired woman lying in the bed with many tubes running in her and an oxygen map on her face. She barely looked alive.
“This is Ms Grey, when we retrieved Rachel she was there as well. She was barely alive……..the transport crew actually revived her twice on the way in. Dr. MacTaggart is familiar with the pt and should be in soon. She’s on a respirator right now she has zero brain activity. She should be a gonner at this point but something is keeping her alive. She’s giving off the same readings Rachel was when we first found them. But Rachel’s reading returned to normal.............Mrs. Grey hasn’t changed.”
Domino crossed her arms and shivered, “So what ever did this to her………………this could have happened to Rachel?”
Alex took a deep breath, “That’s exactly what she’s saying Dom.”
Bishop had seen enough he was going to recheck his data bank. None of this makes any sense, he thought, Jean wasn’t supposed to return to earth for at least another month and there was no record of her almost dying……………well when she came back. His files were actually filled with references with Jean dying but that had to be a programming glitch. And why would Rachel have been involved in this? Why did she come out of the experience with only a little memory gap and Jean is barley clinging to life?
There was one thing that Bishop was sure of. Every holo-vid he had ever seen concerning a Jean Grey leaving the earth under mysterious circumstances and returning almost as unexpectedly always meant the same things...............bad things where about to happen.
