ARE YOU MADD!? No I have a nice reading area. A flat clean table with good light. I lay it flat and treat it gently. Goes in the baggy with board and is filed away.
If you're a collector you try to keep it in the best possible condition. If you just enjoy reading comics you just read it however it's comfortable. But, for repeated reading, you might just want to hold it by the spine and keep it from making any folds.
I never read it like that. I usually let it sit in my raised lap while I lay down on my couch. Very nice relaxed position and my comic doesn't get banged up or anything afterwards.
I keep the book resting on the bag and board, so the spine is nice and straight. It also prevents my hand sweat from rubbing the print off of the back cover (i have it happen with Wizard mag often... not that I collect that).
I also never open the spine more then 110 degrees. I let the book open as much as it wants to, and never force it.
Ok, so does anyone know of any comic book readers that read books that way? The reason I'm asking was that I saw a clip from Lost where the supposed comic geek was reading a comic on the plane and he folded the book over. My first thought was that that was out of character but a friend of mine is convinced many comic book readers do it.

I love the fact that out of all the things in that show, that's the thing that raised a question in your mind...
Visible Dials and Pushing Damage need to be optional. This is the way.

Yeah, I'm a geek. I remember one time I was watching Friends and Ross referenced the Incredible Hulk #72 and right away I said "Hey! There is no Incredible Hulk #72" (at that time there wasn't at least).
But in this case, I have never actually watched a full episode of Lost. I just happened to be flicking through the channels and caught this scene.

i think it all depends on what kind of comic reader you are. if you are a casual reader and just read 'em, then toss them about, then it doesn't matter how you hold them. i'm a serious collector, so i try not to touch them much (DC books tend to stick to my skin) and then file away in bags w/ boards. really important issues go into the safe...
