How do you go about doing that? I tried asking my judge to see if he agreed that such tactic worked, but he said that the effect is lost right after I turn it off as the character would go back under my opponents control. I didn't really feel like arguing with the judge of the tournament.
So could someone explain to me how that works, and how I could explain this to the judge?
You just declare that you are turning off the power before you do anything with the character. Once you perform your free action, the character is back in your opponent's control and you can't turn anything off.

Explain it to him by showing him the DR rule book (page 12):
Powers
Colored squares that appear behind a character’s combat values represent its powers.
A character’s powers can change as it takes damage or is healed. Descriptions of all powers and their effects appear on the powers and abilities card.
Powers are in effect when they appear in the stat slot. If a power is optional, it is assumed to be in effect during an action unless it is canceled at the beginning of that action. When a power is canceled, it is canceled until the end of that turn and resumes effect at the beginning of the next player’s turn.
Note, that only the end of a turn and the beginning of the next turns on a canceled power. Switching the charcter back to your opponent's control is not the beginning of your opponent's turn.
If you mind controlled your opponent's character A who has outwit and then subsequently had them outwit a power held by your opponent's character B, is the power of B still outwitted after control of the character A goes back to your opponent?
I assume the power would be still be outwitted until the end of my turn. Is this right?

Just remember that if you use Outwit or Perplex, that counts as your Mind Control Action for that figure and control reverts back to its player immediately afterwards - i.e., you cannot Outwit and then attack with the figure.
Been a while since this has come up in one of my games, so let me get some furthr clarification. Canceling a power must be done before you take an action with a MC character, but canceling the power doesn't count as an action itself, right? (I.E. I could MC Superman, cancel his IMP, and then move him closer to my team, correct?)

Correct.
However, Impervious is no longer an optional power, so it cannot be canceled any more.
