If a character drops another character next to a figure with the KC team ability, do they still have to roll against the KC TA?

If you fail the roll, do you then move the character being dropped once space away from the intended square or can you just drop him anywhere else adjacent to the person carrying him?

No. The character that was dropped off was not moving (the carrying character was). Since it wasn't moving, the KC TA is not activated.
