The Terrigen Mist is a fictional substance from the Marvel Comics Universe, a natural mutagen able to alter Inhuman biology. Albeit sometimes the mutate subjects gain superhuman abilities, like Medusa or Black Bolt, in the past an out-of-control exposition to the Terrigen Mists mutated the major part of the Inhuman population in hideous deformed monsters. After centuries of eugenetics and birth control the Inhumans managed to mitigate the genetic damage, and also discovered a more responsible use of Terrigen Mists. They soon began to let only genetically perfect specimens undergo the random mutations provoked by the Mists. If theoretically speaking the genetic screening could avoid the risk of hideous and animal mutations in individual, sometimes an Inhuman became a de-evolved (even mindless, sometimes) evolutionary inferior throw-back, an Alpha Primitive, and thus branded as an outcast. Even if it was largely believed that Terrigen Mists were toxic for regular Homo Sapiens specimens, in the alternate future of Earth X was suggested that the Mists could have the same mutagenic effect on both species.
In Inhuman culture, it is not necessary to expose a child to the mist, although it is highly sought after.
please read the Inhumans TPB by Paul Jenkins for an example of what happens in the Inhumans culture when teens are exposed to the mist (the mist is derived from crystals).
In the story, one of the girls is transformed into a pterodactyl-like hybrid which is highly coveted in the genetic scheme of things because she turns out to be a natural flyer. One of the most athletic boys in the story is transformed in a puny body with artistic powers (and finds out his dreams of the guard are crushed). The pterodactyl-hybird girl WAS best friends with another girl in her "batch" but pretty much disowned her when her friend only got freakly long fingers... of course later in the story we find out that freaky finger girl also has healing powers... but she turns to dino-girl and basically says "guess you shouldn't have disowned me, b*tch" It was a really great read and the art was beautiful and expressive.
There is also a TPB that follows this, with the youngsters becoming exchange students at a college in the USA. Great reading how removed they are from American culture and societal issues.
Every relationship is fundamentally a power struggle, and the individual in power is whoever likes the other person less.
-Chuck Klosterman, "Sex, Drugs, and Cocoa Puffs"
Also, it should be noted that it's essentially the basis for Earth X. Bolt exposes the entire human population to it by diffusing the mist into the atmosphere in order to ease the persecution of the Inhumans.
