I believe that I know this, but it was the source of dispute during a game, and since what I understand to the be ruling favoured me, I was accused of cheating.
I had U Catwoman in hindering terrain. Because of her Batman Ally team ability, she is stealthed. An enemy V Catwoman was placed beside her, and wanted to Outwit my Catwoman's Super Senses. I informed the other player that even though they were adjacent, his Catwoman still had no line of fire to mine, and since line of fire is required for Outwit, he cannot Outwit me. This seemed to the other players like I was making sh!t up just to benefit myself, and as a result, I need someone to either:
I had the same issue happen to me just last night. My Rookie Invisible Girl was on hindering terrain and my opponent wanted to use Black Panther to outwit her defend while standing in an adjacent square. My argument was the same as yours (no line of fire) but I didn't want to push the issue since at the time, it looked like I was going to win anyway.
I backed off the issue, and he proceded to do it about 10 more time that game. He ended up turning the game around and winning.
Outwit always requires LOF, whether you are adjacent or not. However, the Catwoman in this example will never be able to establish LOF without the Superman Ally ability. Close combat attacks are allowed because they do not require LOF, but that does not mean that being adjacent automatically grants line of fire, either.
EDIT: This is the official stance as taken from Chapeau, and it has been the official stance for a while now, actually.
