All-Star Superman - If you like Superman, or the way comics used to be (ie kind of upbeat on the whole), this is a great comic. The stories are fun, self contained (ie no 6 parters here), yet still have an underlying story going on. Then again, even if you aren't a Superman fan this book might make you one.
Captain America - Well, it's on hiatus right now, and who knows when it comes back, but everything up till now has been brilliant. Good stories, stellar art, and bang on characterization. The best book Marvel put out in the last two years, bar none.
JSA - Best team book on the market. The old one was a great ride from start to finish, and it's only getting bigger and better this time round. Only on issue three so easy to jump onto. A great mix of new and old heros, and what it means to be a hero.
Conan - My indie pick. As good as the above are for having writers that genuinely care about the character, this one is better. As much as the previous authors 'get' their character, the guys over at Dark Horse seem to 'get' Conan just a little better (I really don't know how, as the top three books are all ones where I'd say the authors are the tops in the field for knowing and loving their comic heros and villains). The art is simply amazing, very lush and vibrant (the coloring and Nord's pencil work make this book come alive like nothing else on the market). We've seen 3 different authors so far, and you can't notice any change in quality or thematic style. Awesome. Also the place to go if you like a more 'gritty' hero.
Anyways, one of these would be my recommendation.

Hmm...I was already considering JSA before you guys posted (I've been reading it, issues 1-3 are so awesome and leave me hungry for more). Now, I'm certain of it.

I don't know what Fables is, but I'm betting it doesn't have Maxine Hunkel in it...
...I'm sticking with JSA.
No, it doesn't, and that's probably one of the reasons it's a good thing
(not that I dislike JSA, just Maxine's character annoys me is all. And JSA wishes on it's best day to be as good as Fables is in a normal off-beat issue. So it is said, so it shall come to pass).

Criminal Macabre - I know this may sound a little obscure, but seriously, this is one of the best indie comics out there... and no one knows it. How can you not like a disgruntled drug addicted detective (love that alliteration) who takes up paranormal cases on werewolves, vampires, and other various folk lore. By the way, did I mention his best friends are zombies?
Batman Detective - If you liked Batman the Animated Series, pick this one, it's the same guy who wrote most of BtAS, Superman, and JLU... as well as various other cartoons you may have watched as a kid.
JSA - Hmmm... this book is definitely one to look into, especially since it's the main book aiming to make Kingdom Come a reality... maybe?
Thank you for voting for Barack Skrullbama. Embrace Change. He loves you.
If I were only going to read one comic book, I'd leave the big two behind and try an Indy title. I stopped buying DC after Infinite Crisis was over and never looked back. Marvel's in the cross-hairs right now with the Cap thing.
The Virgin comics line has been pretty good. Devi or Seven Brothers would be fun. Others have said Invincible. Some friends are enjoying The Midnighter series. Then there's Astro City.
I've been back into D&D lately, check out my website:
One of the best books on the market, especially good since it has little to no tie ins, unless you count Jack Of Fables, or 1001 Nights. Also Invincible is a great series. If you are tired of mainstream comics go for this one! I could go on and on but i suggest these as well:
The Walking Dead
Ex Machina

Yep yep. You have excellent taste my friend. You just named five of probably the best 12 books I buy, and the top three titles I get too (Walking Dead and Ex Machina in addition to Fables). Image is the money right now with WD, Invincible, Fell and Casanova going on.
